Rick Kahler, MS, CFP, is president of Kahler Financial Group, a fee-only financial planning firm. In 2009 WEalth Manager magazine named his firm the largest financial planning firm in the Northern Great Plaines and Rocky Mountain Region. In 2008 BusinessWeek named him one of the 15 most experienced planners in the U.S.
He became South Dakota’s first CFP in 1983, and in 1998 was appointed by the South Dakota State Legislature to the South Dakota Investment Council, charged with managing the state’s multi-billion dollar retirement fund.
Rick is a co-author of four revolutionary books on money, financial planning, and therapy titled Conscious Finance (Foxcraft 2007), The Financial Wisdom of Ebenezer Scrooge (HCI 2006), Facilitating Financial Health (NLU 2008), and Wired For Wealth (HCI 2009).
His work and research into the pshycology of money with Drs. Ted and Brad Klontz was featured in Wynonna Judd’s book Coming Home To Myself, ABC's 20/20 and Good Morning America, NBC's Today Show, The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal, which called their work "an innovative effort that combines experiential therapy with nuts-and-bolts financial planning."
Rick is currently instructing a graduate course "Facilitating Financial Health" for Golden Gate Universitiy.

Rick graduated from the American College, Bryn Mawr, PA, in 1988, earning the Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) degree. In 1984, he was admitted to the Registry of Financial Planning Practitioners by the International Association of Financial Planners. He obtained his master’s degree in wealth management in 1999.
Rick served a two-year term on the Journal of Financial Planning Advisory Board 2003-2004 and was chair of the 2004 FPA National Retreat.
In 2003, Mr. Kahler was recognized by National American University with the Alumni Distinguished Service Award. He has served on and chaired the South Dakota Investment Council (managing $6 billion) and has served nationally in several leadership capacities with the Financial Planning Association.
In 2008 the Journal of Financial Planning awarded Rick the Financial Frontiers Award for his research paper, "Who's Planning for the Planner."
