I was recently the Executive Director of the Bronx Conservatory of Music. Since 2005, I was a member of the Board of Directors and a part-time volunteer as its Chief Administrative Officer while working full-time in advertising. BCM, founded in 1990, serves over 100 students three days/week in two locations with a dozen part-time instructors and two part-time administrators. Yet, remarkably, in its entire history the organization never had a full-time employee.
I came on board as Executive Director full-time in March with a difficult challenge: to try to grow the school and acquire substantial contributions, or return the school to volunteer-management that would at best confine the school to a minimal size, and at worst lead to its demise.
In six months, I managed to increase revenues by 187%. I developed one major new hub and seven after-school locations, and launched a new summer program. The number and amount of contributions increased significantly under my watch. The school’s funding needs were nearly solved after persuading city and state politicians to support the school’s efforts. But unfortunately it was too late; we were unable to get the funds the school needed in time. Sadly, the Board had no choice but to return to volunteer-management, and I resigned.
As President of Smarter Media Inc., and subsequently General Manager of Media First International, I lead new business efforts, external strategic relationships, and internal department growth and development planning.
In the past, I've proved my marketing and media expertise in a broad range of product and service categories. I helped successfully launch such brands as Prego spaghetti sauce and Teddy Grahams snacks (new product Effie Award winners each). As Media Director for internet/traditional agency Blue Dingo/GB, I contributed to the success of the agency’s new business efforts by providing a seamless integration of online and offline media plans.
