Dick Lee Ph. D.'s Projects

  • Schwinn Upright Exercise Bikes, Recumbents and Ellipticals

    • June 2012 to September 2013
Team Members: Dick Lee Ph. D., Value Innovations did not do the work - Nautilus was using our Value Innovation Process, Jake Petersen - Director of Product Development was the team leader

Nautilus, the exercise equipment manufacturer, was experiencing a sales decline in Upright bikes in mid 2012. A 6 person team was tasked with reversing this situation. As a result of using the Value Innovation Process(R) and enablinmg tools, the cardio control was redesigned and a three speed silent fan, a USB port and upgraded speakers were added. The new products (three Upright Bikes: 170, 130 and A10) were introduced in September, 2013 and customers love the machines. Here are excerpts from reviews on Amazon: "I love the fan. Works great, cooling on the head and shoulders. Today I hooked up my iPhone and played my music. The speakers are great! LOVE this exercise bike!!!!"
"Kudos to Amazon for all of their help and to Schwinn for building a really nice product. 5 stars"
The result: The products are selling like hot cakes.
Congratulations to the team at Nautilus, you did a great job!

  • Value Innovation: Passport to Wealth Creation

    • Research*Technology Management
    • March 2005
Authors: Dick Lee Ph. D., Thomas A. Dillon, David Matheson

OVERVIEW: Although most managers will agree that innovation can be the passport to wealth creation, many of their actual business practices and behaviors fail to support the activities crucial to value innovation. In particular, many companies over-emphasize technology innovation and R&D, which, when used in isolation, are insufficient to create new wealth. Through literature review and interviews with value innovators, a subcommittee of the Industrial Research Institute’s Research on-
Research Committee has defined a value innovation process, providing a framework to develop a new product, service or business model that will have a strong, positive effect on enterprise value.

The subcommittee also created a Value IQ instrument to help companies understand their ability to value-innovate and identify those areas where changes in behavior and company culture may be required.

The Value IQ Instrument provided great insights into a company's culture but it took 45 minutes to complete. The Value Innovation Process Assessment Tool was developed to provide an instrument that could be completed on line in <10 minutes.

KEY CONCEPTS: value creation, value innovation process, enterprise value, company culture, corporate culture, stakeholder behavior, capability and capacity to innovate.

  • Identify Your Innovation Enablers and Inhibitors

    • Research*Technology Management
    • November 2008
Authors: Dick Lee Ph. D., Thomas J. Balsano, Nina F. Goodrich, John W. Miley, Terri F. Morse and David A. Roberts

OVERVIEW: Air Products and Chemicals, Alcan Global Pharmaceutical Packaging, Boeing, Milliken & Co. and Solvay Advanced Polymers have used the Value Innovation Potential Assessment Tool (VIPAT) to identify their Value Innovation enablers and inhibitors. Value Innovation is defined as delivering exceptional value to the most important customer in the value chain.

The information obtained from the VIPAT allows managers to understand the cultural drivers for innovation within their organization and guide the creation of a more effective Value Innovation culture.

KEY CONCEPTS: innovation assessment, value innovation, value innovation tools, organizational culture.
