Senior Network and Security Engineer
Rotterdam Area, Netherlands
Technical Unix Engineer at Snow BV that Specializes in Unix, Networking and Security consultancy and support.
I am an experienced system administrator (since '99), mainly focussed on the *BSD derived systems, but also a fair bit of Linux distributions (Slackware, Redhat, Suse and so on). Since I am heavily involved in OpenSource work I joined the FreeBSD committers group (doc, www, secteam, bugmeister, secteam-secretary, src) to assist with the various tasks that are open.
My focus in my job is networking and security (and ofcourse Unix), I am an experienced Checkpoint administrator, My current task is migrating firewalls from one vendor to the other (checkpoint, juniper, fortigate) and doing network management (various cisco devices, from the 800 series to 3750g switches). Previous tasks included maintaining and doing active change management on various Checkpoint devices, from building VPN's to High Availability clusters, and a lot of cisco devices to operate WAN lines (cisco 2600, 3500, 6500 series), and migrating towards a centralized datacenter.
Beyond that I am also a teacher that transfers my skills to people around me that need it. I am keen on evolving and would like to see everyone benefit from knowledge.

JR Webscripting & Hosting is a young Hosting company providing specific demands from customers to meet their Online activities.
I am the one who is responsible for the machines themselves, I administer them, I make sure they are as up to date as possible (Without breaking things) and I do system scripting to make sure we can do repeating tasks as quick and correct as possible. I also write some webscripts where possible and make sure statistics and monitoring (switchmon, nagios) are available to my partner.

After KPN, the department I worked for was included in the Getronics organisation. During my time at KPN I was involved with the preparation of a big physical datacenter move, at Getronics I was hired to complete this task, being responsible for the overall success for the Government Department that we host.
For this we build up new network infrastructure, ordered new lines, installed the lines, tested the lines, and finally moved over the current physical hardware (excluding local network infrastructure) to the new location. The change was planned on a saturday, we scored 100% on this move. Everything worked after testing, within the specified amounts of time.
Currently I am doing various little projects for the Government Department, as well as rolling out new infrastructure, thinking along with setups, architecture, projects etc.
That along side with helping various infrastructure collegue's as allround troubleshooter to help reduce problems.

At KPN, I am hired for a dutch government project, which includes migrating the current firewalls from Checkpoint and Netscreen, to a redundant path of Netscreens and Fortigates. I closely work together with the operational team that eventually will manage these devices, and the projectleaders as well as the contacts at the government to make sure we get the best result as possible.
Both migrations went fine, no major fallouts, just very minor details that were missed by handcopying everything (10.000+ objects)
Beyond project activities, I am trying to help the operational team where possible, by scripting and creating new / better traffic diagrams with mrtg and automating some tasks where possible. I also try to teach my co-workers on whatever aspect rises and I have experience with (network management, cisco devices, juniper, checkpoint devices, the fortigates, unix, scripting, management and things like that).

From oct 2007, I am member of a new team that implements an entirely new datacenter for "The Financial Institute". With my fellow-collegue I architected the network environment, and I architected the firewall environment for "The Financial Institute". Now that the architectural phase is over, I am actively helping and building up the new data center, by implementing switches, routers, firewalls and configuring them to meet the demands of the customer (keeping Security as a redline during implementation).

At the Financial institute I was part of the networking team. This team is part of a bigger IT team, delivering the IT demands of the business. The network team is responsible for the Firewalls, various other security devices, VPN clients, remote access (road warriors), unix(FreeBSD/Redhat) servers (DNS,mail, management software) and networking equipment (switches/routers/mpls networks).

At ING I was employed as a Information Security Specialist. My team maintained several security devices amongst them are routers, switches, servers, ids systems and firewalls. We were responsible for the overall security of these devices and for the protection of the ING network.
My job was mainly focussed on operational management of the devices we maintain. I did that with great enthusiasm, keeping the devices up and running, and improving maintenance scripts, migrating them to a common standard used, and developping new scripts that would include a new standard. The programming languages mostly used for that were KSH and perl.
Later I got involved in IDS, monitoring and maintaing the security of them, I also was responsible for all the branches of ING, doing all the firewall changes, ids changes (host and server based) and basically everything.
