Web Evangelist at OPERA
Manchester, United Kingdom
Patrick works as Web Evangelist in the Developer Relations team at Opera Software ASA.
In a previous life, he was Web Editor for the University of Salford, where he headed a small central web team. In 2003 he implemented one of the first web standards based XHTML/CSS driven UK university sites.
He has been engaged in the discourse on accessibility since early 2001, regularly contributing to a variety of web development and accessibility related mailing lists and forums. He also takes an active role
in the running of Accessify.com, moderates the Accessify forum, and is co-lead of the Web Standards Project Accessibility Task Force (WaSP ATF), which he joined in June 2005.
Published works include a chapter in "Web Accessibility: Web Standards and Regulatory Compliance", released by Friends of Ed in 2006.
In his spare time, Patrick pursues his passion for photography and runs a small web/design consultancy.
An outspoken accessibility and standards advocate , Patrick favours a pragmatic hands-on approach to web accessibility over purely theoretical, high-level discussions.
"I’m an idealist by nature, but a pragmatist by trade. I’d never class myself as an expert and I certainly don’t have all the answers...I’m just an opinionated guy eager to find real world solutions 'where the rubber meets the road'."

splintered is the freelance web development and design alter ego of patrick h. lauke.
its commitment is to deliver simple, accessible and usable web sites using current best practices (specifically web standards: semantic, structural, table-less xhtml/css markup) and the occasional spot of print and motion design.
with a range of skills and interests covering graphic design, PHP/MySQL web development, multimedia, video editing and traditional photography, splintered can tackle small multi-faceted projects at a price that's right for you.
if you're in the greater manchester area — or even further afield — why not get in touch for an informal project evaluation, and see what splintered can offer.
