July 2005 — Present (4 years 1 month)
I've fixed Carleton's backup and SAN infrastructure, made many individual improvements to system architecture and security, and deployed the Zimbra Collaboration Suite, consolidating two older and less capable email/calendaring systems. Currently working on Linux server virtualization, standardization, and consolidation, as well as Windows infrastructure development (replacing a legacy Novell infrastructure) and development of a scientific computing capability (Gaussian/WebMO, EMBOSS).

June 1998 — July 2005 (7 years 2 months)
Created and led UNet Systems team: 3 full-time staff, 1-4 student developers. Built the core DNS/DHCP/Email/LDAP/Time/File/Backup infrastructure from scratch. Migrated legacy VMS Mail to IMAP on Linux. Conceived and managed MyBrandeis and MyCourses portal projects. Added the title CSO, while retaining systems architecture roles. Along with current Director John Turner, led Windows 2000 Active Directory development and rollout. Participated in biweekly strategic planning meetings with other managers to set ITS priorities and, later, to facilitate the integration of the University Libraries into a combined LTS organization.

January 1993 — May 1998 (5 years 5 months)
One of 5 consultants in the networking group's Consulting team. Peers included Chip Haven, Roger Beatty, Sunia Yang, Gene Yep, and Brian Waugh. Duties included installation planning, tier-three support, project management, instruction, product and fundamental technology research, and documentation. Interfaced with senior architects like Bob Morgan and Jeff Hodges. My specific areas of responsibility included the student residences, the main arts & sciences quad, the business school, appletalk, windows 95 support (google win95netbugs), and "public communications." I built the second, third, and sixth versions of http://www.stanford.edu/group/networking/, which can be found on archive.org.

February 1990 — March 1993 (3 years 2 months)
Started out as a go-fer student employee for Jeff Merriman and his assistant director, then grew into increasingly responsible and technical role. Built, then upgraded some of the first LocalTalk and Ethernet networks at Stanford. Built dorm labs. Wrote documentation. Worked full-time for two summers and more than half time my senior year.
BA , Political Science , 1989 — 1993
I took a class on civil/military relations and sat on a presidential "Stanford in the 21st Century" committee with Professor and Provost Condoleezza Rice, but I can't really claim to have known her.
When Chelsea Clinton was a student at Stanford, I knew where she lived, because access to the residential network equipment was restricted by the Secret Service.
