Maverick accountant, expert bookkeeper and Business Growth Advisor at Coalville Business Services Limited
Leicester, United Kingdom
I am a qualifed Certified Practising Accountant having passed my final exams way back in 1981. I actually can’t believe that was 28 years ago!! Anyway, I am now in my 50’s and I have been running my own business since May 1983. And before you ask, no, I have never regretted a moment of it!
Part of the membership requirements of my professional body now dictate that I spend quite a lot of time on “CPD” - continuing professional education (one of their better ideas) - and over the last two years I decided to study business growth and marketing.
I have learnt such a lot and that knowledge has radically changed my old “accountants” approach to business. It has made such a difference to the way I work and operate I feel that I just have to pass on this knowledge. It is simply too powerful to hold back!! - but I will try and do it in simple terms rather than expecting you to spend hours, as I had to, working through the difficult language that trainers seem to use to pass on their concepts.

May 2000 — Present (9 years 7 months)
Maverick accountant, expert bookkeeper and I am keen to help people grow their business. I spend my days promoting the business, helping people out on twitter, finalizing accounts and tax work that has been done by the staff, doing remote desktop support for resolving client bookkeeping problems and the occasional computer hassles.
I write articles for my blog, for other people's blogs as a guest, and for some article sites about on the internet. I have recently written a Recession Busting Tips Report which you are welcome to download for free from http://recessionbustingtips.com.
I enjoy challenges. In the present climate I help clients get the funding they need for business projects, or general working capital requirements - yes it is still out there!
I enjoy the tax work the best though. Tax Investigations can be a traumatic time for the clients involved and achieving a good outcome over a long period makes me feel that an accountant can make a difference to someone's life.
If you are in the middle of a long, drawn out struggle with HM Revenue & Customs, don't hesitate to contact me. I would love to help you.
Call my office at 0800 047 0731 if I can assist you in any way.

May 1983 — May 2000 (17 years 1 month)
This was my chance to impact on the world. I was launched into self employment because I fell out with the chap I was considering going into partnership with. The local town was in depression as the pits all around were shutting. People said I was mad to start up working on my own - but who's laughing now!
I had a vision that I wanted to work with wealthy individuals who were willing to learn and adapt, and that is how I built my business up. This company continued trading until May 2000 when I decided the name was not giving people the full picture of the services I was offering. So I brached away from the traditional name with "Accountant" in it and the new business Coalville Business Services Ltd was born.
It was a subtle change but the right one.

May 1981 — May 1983 (2 years 1 month)
This position really honed my accounting skills. I was exposed to businesses of all sizes between the two offices of this practice in Berkhamsted and London. I had a really good manager who turned me from a raw newly qualified accountant into a "balanced" accountant confident in my abilities and knowledge - Thanks John - I owe you one!

September 1980 — May 1981 (9 months)
This was my experience in industry. I enjoyed the different work from public practice for about 3 months but missed the variety and personalities involved in my former posts. The work was the same month in, month out and I gave my notice in as soon as possible and returned to practice.

January 1979 — September 1980 (1 year 9 months)
I joined Mike Cutler just after he had a stroke. He worked at home and I was interviewed by the president of the ACCA at the time as he was helping Mike run his business while he was ill.
I had a really good high level grounding here as I was Mike's right hand man while he recovered. I did all kinds of work that really pushed me and my knowledge to the limits. We did a lot of work together which really expanded my knowledge and I owe him a lot.

June 1974 — December 1977 (3 years 7 months)
This was my first ever job in an Accountant's office. I didn't know what an accountant was from a banana. But this was the 70's and I had loads of interviews and job offers. I took the job with the man I liked to most, Ernest John Clouder.
He gave me a fantastic grounding in all things financial and I loved the work. He trusted me and from very early on I was talking directly with clients and working in their offices on my own.
He put me through the ACCA foundation course and was gutted when I eventually decided to leave to go to Huddersfield Poly and do my next two professional level exams full time.
I have fond memories of my time with Mr Clouder. He was a Salvation Army Captain and a really nice chap. He died shortly after I left.
