Manager of Information Architecture at Reliant Energy
Houston, Texas Area
I've been developing websites since 1998 and have managed projects both big and small. I know how to communicate with designers, coders and business folk alike. More importantly, I understand how people use websites and use that knowledge to create satisfying online experiences.
Since 2001, my focus has been in making sites that are both useful and user friendly. It benefits everyone — customers, business people, project managers, developers and designers. It's good sense all around.
As a usability analyst, I design and conduct usability tests, develop electronic surveys, analyze web traffic data, moderate focus groups, evaluate interface designs, and develop intuitive site maps & navigation for web applications.

I play multiple roles as the Manager of Information Architecture at Reliant Energy. I developed a transformational user experience design process that focuses on prototyping and testing concepts with actual customers. This new approach for the Online Marketing team has led to improved quality and measurable returns on key projects, such as signing up as a new customer.
I also manage a team of senior and junior information architects, both on-site and remote, mentor them in usability principles, prototyping techniques and documentation standards. As part of the team, I make sure that my deliverables always set the standard for the rest of the team.
I have worked proactively with the Director of Online Marketing to develop a vision and strategy for Reliant.com for the upcoming years. I have already made progress towards that vision with several major projects. For example, I have developed customer experience designs that have completely transformed the shopping process and sign up process on Reliant.com, as well as revamped the registration process for online account access to reduce barriers to entry for key transactions we want customer to execute online.
Additionally, I led the design and customer testing of the new Reliant.com homepage which embodies the customer-focused vision I developed. This new homepage replaced a 2 year old version that had many serious but previously unidentified usability flaws. The usability failure points of the previous design equated a mass of lost business opportunities.
Finally, I have consulted on various aspects of the website production process, with the intent of improving the customer experience and business value holistically. These areas include HTML implementation for SEO, accessibility, compatibility, analytics reporting and page performance, copywriting for improved conversion rates and comprehension, and graphic design for ease of use and readability.

In seven years at Duke Energy, I played a number of roles and took on many responsibilities. From traditional web design and development, I moved on with Portal design and development (Plumtree/BEA), content management (Interwoven Teamsite), process management, project management and usability analysis.
My last large-scale project I managed was the redesign of the Duke Energy corporate website in 2006. We delivered ahead of schedule in spite of the compressed time frame and the 2000+ page scope of the website. The audience for this website was the 5 million residential to large-scale utility customers in the Carolinas and Midwest US regions.
Upon completion, I was promoted as a Usability Architect and led two colleagues in a highly successful user experience analysis of the same site. The comprehensive approach to the project along with excellent written and verbal reporting made it a major success for the customers and internal stakeholders alike.
