Raghunathan is the Chief Executive of GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of the infrastructure major, the GMR Group. He was Managing Director, GMR Industries Ltd from Jan 2007 to June 2008; President of ING Vysya Bank from 2001 to 200; Professor of Finance & Accounting at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad from 1982 to 2001, He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Bocconi, Milan in Italy since 1990.
He is or has been on the board of various banks, merchant banks, stock exchanges, corporates, and educational institutions and has been a member of several national level committees of the, Ministry of Finance, SEBI, BSE, NSE and other professional bodies. He was also the Chairman of the MBA Programme and the Chairman of Finance and Accounting Area at IIM, Ahmedabad for several years in the past.
He has written nearly 400 papers and articles, 6 books and several monographs and published cases in the field of capital markets and corporate finance. His last book was 'Games Indians Play' (Penguin, Dec 2006) has been a best seller. His forthcoming books are 'Don't Sprint the Marathon' (Harper Collins) and 'Confounded: of Paradoxes and Dilemmas" (Penguin). He has been a consultant for several Indian and multinational companies and banks and has lectures extensively in India and abroad. He writes a regular guest column for for The Economic Times and MINT. He has also held regular columns with The Times of India, Hindustan Times, Financial Express, Business Today, Dalal Street, and a few other magazines.
Personal:
Collecting locks is his main hobby. Probably the largest private collection, it has been featured widely in India on various television channels and written about. He has also been a cartoonist (held a weekly cartoon column in the Financial Express); played chess at All-India level, and sketched competitively in his earlier years.
