Dr Raffaele Califano was awarded a Degree in Medicine and Surgery with full marks (110/110 cum laude), in October 2003, by the University of Perugia Medical School in Perugia Italy.

From November 2003 to October 2007 he trained in Medical Oncology at the Department of Medical Oncology, Ospedale Santa Maria della Misericordia, Perugia, Italy (Director: Dr Lucio Crino’) where he gained experience in the management of patients solid tumours and haematological malignancies.
He was involved in the treatment with high-dose chemotherapy and autologous peripheric stem cell transplantation.
During his training, from November 2006 to May 2007, he was a Clinical Fellow with the Lung and Melanoma Team at the Department of Medical Oncology of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester, United Kingdom, under the supervision of Professor Nick Thatcher. He was able to gain more experience in the management of Lung cancer and Melanoma.
In November 2007 he was awarded the Specialist Diploma in Oncology with full marks (50/50 cum laude) from the University of Perugia, Italy.
In December 2007 he was awarded a research grant by the Italian Federation for Cancer Research (FIRC).
From February 2008 to May 2008 he held the position of Specialist Registrar in Medical Oncology at the Cancer Research UK Department of Medical Oncology of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester, UK.
In June 2008 was appointed Clinical Research Fellow in Medical Oncology to the Lung and Melanoma team, working with Professor Nick Thatcher, Dr Fiona Blackhall and Dr Paul Lorigan at the Cancer Research UK Department of Medical Oncology of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.
He is currently training in clinical trial design and management and is the Sub-Investigator for several investigator-led and commercial clinical trials.
