Mickie Kennedy is the founder and president of eReleases, a leader in affordable press release writing and distribution services. Kennedy developed eReleases in 1998 with the belief that publicity shouldn't be restricted to the big guys. Most PR firms have no problem with small businesses. It's the small budgets or "a la carte" projects that most PR firms find problematic, given their capital-intensive business models. His model has proved successful. He reached client number 7,000 in 2009.
In the years since eReleases was founded, there have been lots of other operators that have riddled the landscape. Some have appropriated the language, calling themselves a newswire. Most don't issue press releases over a dedicated newswire feed that goes into newsrooms nationwide. Posting a press release on a website and adding rss feeds is not PR and it is most certainly not a newswire.
