National IT Director of the Federation of Small Businesses, the UK's Leading Business Organisation
Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
I have been the National IT Chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses (the UK's Leading Business Organisation) for several years (before that I was Northeast Regional vice-chairman for 6 years) and have many years experience of running small businesses and now a fair bit of experience at working at the heart of a not-so-small business:-)
I began my career in engineering in the 70s and gained experience in general engineering including welding, heating systems and ventilation systems as well as qualifications in technical drawing. At that time the first Microcomputers were appearing and I built one of the first from scratch (Nascom 1). I then moved into electronics which had been a lifelong hobby (along with photography), gaining wide-ranging experience of electronic hardware and computer software development.
As comfortable in meeting with key industry figures and government as I am working with engineers, developers and staff, I am something of an IT evangelist with experience of team management and negotiation in both small and medium sized organisations. I've attended and contributed to meetings with prime ministers and opposition ministers, key figures in the IT industry... and small local volunteer meetings. I have judged several national and regional SME and IT awards including Computing magazine, BCS and others.
My technical background is in electronic hardware design (single-chip cpu subsystems including PC speech, touch access control, atomic time systems etc), general digital electronics and on the software front I have a range of programming skills and have used and developed various web cms systems.
Always looking for new challenges.
On the techical side, asp and asp.net, ajax, streaming media, blogging, voip and am well versed with applications and tools including but not limited to windows xp,vista and server editions, sql 2005, office 2007, sharepoint 2007, mediastudio, various artwork systems such as photoshop, gimp, paint.net etc etc., vmware, virtual pc etc.... on the non-technical side - managing people.
