Authors: Michael Psallidas, Christos PapageorgiouSolar power systems convert the inexhaustible solar energy to electricity both with direct and indirect methods. Most popular solar power systems are the photovoltaics (PV) and the concentrated solar power systems (CSP). These systems are growing rapidly in the recent years with both large scale units and small distributed units to operate and to develop at over 100 countries.
Further to the above technologies, a promising solar power technology is the Floating Solar Chimney (FSC) technology. This technology uses the greenhouse effect to produce airflow, in order to rotate generators, which produce electricity. This technology is cost effective related to PV and CSP technologies, although more land is needed, which is not a problem for desert or semi- desert areas. Furthermore FSC technology is cost effective compared to nuclear plants of UAE.
In order to evaluate the FSC technology, there is a full roll-out program in three phases, which will cost about 10 million USD.
The unused mid-latitude desert or semi desert lands of high solar radiation in many countries in all the continents can be used for large-scale application of FSC technology securing sustainability and mitigating global warming effects.
