I own and operate the business as a profitable enterprise. It succeeded a previous business called The Small Business Adshop, one of Australia's most successful small business training firms. I changed the name and focus because I found that most small business advertising failed because of lack of planning and strategy to drive it. By focusing on the causes instead of the effects, we provide much more effective solutions for our clients.

I launched John Counsel Advertising in September 1988 after recovering from the illness that forced me to relinquish my former position as Creative Director at Campaign Pacific earlier that year.
The primary reason — apart from needing to earn income — was the refusal to take "no" for an answer by a couple of former clients with urgent needs that they insisted only I could meet to their satisfaction (flattering, but questionable) and requests from other ad agencies for strategic and creative troubleshooting support. I'd built a reputation for being able to turn tough challenges around quickly, with exceptional results — and I could keep confidences. And I could handle 'difficult' clients very well.
While JCA is no longer a full-time business for me, I still use it for some projects, especially troubleshooting work for other ad agencies.
