John Pinto’s Summary

In the mid-90s, a friend got me interested in the web. He taught me the basics of HTML and how the web worked and, eventually, he and I - along with two more friends - partnered up to create our own web development company. The company didn't make it out of its first year. Regardless, that experience gave me the "bug" and I've been working with technology ever since.

In 2001, I began working as a data technician for Henkels & McCoy. "Data Technician" being a nice name for cable-puller. I was part of a team that traveled around the Southeastern U.S., upgrading the LANs in State Farm agent's offices. Eight (8) months later, we had completed the State Farm project and the Memphis branch was closed. I was offered a transfer to the Dallas office, but I declined in favor of returning to college.

As an undergraduate junior, a friend told me about an internship position available at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center. I applied and attained the position. I have worked for UTHSC since then, climbing my way up the developer ranks. While completing my degree, I was an IT Analyst II (Programmer Analyst) on limited duration appointment (i.e., a contractor) through the Knoxville campus. Upon confirmation of my bachelor's, I became a full-fledged UTHSC employee. In 2007, I earned a promotion to IT Analyst III (Systems Analyst) and took the opportunity to further my education with a Master's in Managment Information Systems.

In December 2008, I earned my graduate degree, finishing with a 3.98 GPA. A single "A-" in my first semester kept me from the coveted 4.00!

I currently plan to spend several more years at UTHSC. Who knows... my boss has plans to retire in a few years. Perhaps, when the time comes, I'll throw my hat into the managment arena. I have also been giving some thought to returning to school for a master's in either Finance or Accounting to supplement my existing skill set. No plans to pursue a PhD.

John Pinto’s Experience

  • Systems Analyst (IT Analyst III)

University of Tennessee Health Science Center

    (Educational Institution; Higher Education industry)

    November 2002Present (7 years 1 month)

I began my career at UT as an intern ("Non-UT-Student Employee") in November 2002.

After the 6 month internship, I had performed well enough that my boss wanted to bring me on, full time. I was offered a contract position out of the Knoxville campus - termed an LDA (Limited-Duration Appointment) - while I was awaiting a true, full-time position here in Memphis to become available.

Roughly a year later, I jumped over to permanent Memphis employee as a Programmer/Analyst (IT Analyst II) and adopted the Financial Aid, Registrar and Admissions systems as my primary foci.

About a year after that, I was promoted to Systems Analyst (IT Analyst III). I have the same areas of focus, but now I also act in a mentoring capacity for my fellow developers.

Unfortunately, it seems as if I've hit a ceiling with my employment at UTHSC. There is no career ladder in place here and IT doesn't offer any IT Analyst IV positions.

John Pinto’s Education

  • The University of Memphis

    MSBA , Management Information Systems , 20062008

Call me a glutton for punishment, but I came back to U of M to do it again. This time, for a Master's of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Management Information Systems.

    All "A"s with a single "A-" ... have I mentioned how much I detest the +/- scale? Final result: a 3.98 GPA.

  • The University of Memphis

    BA , Management Information Systems , 19962004

While it took me a little while longer than most, I completed my undergrad over 8 years of intermittent attendance.

I spent my freshman and sophomore years jumping around intended majors from business to criminal justice to psychology to philosophy until I took a bit of an hiatus... being a typically stupid college kid, I forfieted my scholarship because I didn't do the required service hours.

When I returned roughly 3 years later, it was with a determined mind that I focused on a degree in business with a concentration on business technology.

I finally walked across the big stage in May of 2004 with my diploma in hand.
