Phi Delta Phi’s Summary

Four Students from the University of Michigan Law Department founded Phi Delta Phi in 1869 to “promote a higher standard of professional ethics and culture in this and other law schools and in the profession at large.” Phi Delta Phi International Legal Fraternity, under the guidance of the Phi Delta Phi Legal Institute, is one of the oldest professional organizations in the Western Hemisphere. The organization is the second oldest legal organization in continuous existence in the United States and the third oldest in North America.

Phi Delta Phi has active chapters (called Inns) at law schools in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany and Poland. The total number of initiates exceeds 200,000 and our living members total in excess of 150,000 law students and lawyers. Approximately 2,500 law students are initiated into Phi Delta Phi each year.

Our membership includes judges, presidents, governors, senators, representatives, cabinet members, ambassadors, bar association presidents, and law school deans. From the years 2000 to 2003, all three Chief Justices of the Supreme Courts of the United States, Canada and Mexico were Phi Delta Phis. The late President Gerald R. Ford was a Phi Delta Phi as were both Presidents Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt.
