Over my period with Unisys I worked in a number of roles. Initially I was involved in SI in the upper half of the North Island of NZ, over time my role evolved. Later I led the SI practice for NZ and subsequently for Australia and NZ, as well as leading the Project Quality Office. This evolved into practice management across Asia/Pacific and latterly into resource and capability management. Further, I led and was part of a number of profit improvement activities which were successful in improving margin.

Commenced in London in the audit practice and finished as partner in charge of the IT Consulting practice in New Zealand. I joined C&L after serving 5 year articles with a small firm in the West End of London. C&L was a major influence on my career. The great thing was that I, as a non-univesity graduate, joined this blue chip firm and was able to rapidly progress entirely on merit. Prior to joining I was under the impression that only people from privileged backgrounds could succeed. A key lesson was that C&L, unlike others, lived up to the ethos of merit earned progression, not connections.

December 1989 — November 1995 (6 years )
I was head hunted to this position, from my prior role in Bermuda. This was due to a number of connections I had with NZ, both family and professional. I re-kindled the IT & IS consulting practice and grew it substantially in short order.
Engagements included several major BPR assignments as well as IT strategies and major procurements.
In addition, we established a TQM/ISO quality Management practice .
As part of practice development I presented to a wide variety of people and organisations on BPR and TQM.
I was involved in identifying client opportunities, proposal development, presentation and engagement performance as well as the operational management of the practice.

I was involved in many special projects related to acquistions, divestment. flotation and valuation.

In April 1975 I married my wife, a Kiwi, and in Nov 1975 took up an appointment with C&L Singapore. This was probably the best decision I ever made. I learned more from this than I could ever have imagined prior to actually going to Singapore. All my preconceptions proved to be wrong. This experience has coloured everything subsequently. I learned so much, and I am a much better person through the nearly 4 years I spent in Singapore. 30 years later, I still draw upon the skills I gained then and I am still in contact with a number of my staff from those days. I was one of 2 expatriate managers, my peers, staff and superiors were all Chinese, Indian or Malay, many of my clients were local. This was a defining experience. I value it still.
My experience encompassed a broad range of entities, manufacturing, banking, insurance, shipping, oilfield services and salvage. A number of my projects took me to other countries in the region such as Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia.
