Peter Hoyt’s Summary
Goals:
- To grow a renowned research program in basic and applied science of cell biology, using cross-disciplinary methodology. Combine Biology, and Informatics with the most advanced technologies available, and push the envelope of technology through novel applications.
- To bring technology advancement to the academic community through partnerships with industry using mutually beneficial intellectual property agreements.
- To teach at an academic institution both basic and applied science.
Experience:
- Academic training includes developmental biology of mice, mouse molecular genetics, regulation of gene expression, genomic expression analyses (arrays), bioinformatics, low dose radiation, and cancer biology/toxicology.
- Technological/Industrial experience includes facility production at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, including core facilities in transgenic mouse production, gene targeted "knock-out" facilities, DNA and RNA high-throughput production for DNA microarrays, and high-throughput protein purification and complex isolation laboratories.
-Computers/Informatics experience includes directing a bioinformatics core facility, upgrading the computer systems using Linux and Windows OS. Building servers. Systems administration. Scripting languages. emphasis on open-source bioinformatics tools and interactions within cell metabolism.
Peter Hoyt’s Specialties:
I specialize in cross disciplinary programs and as a liaison between academic Biologists and technologists. Trained as an academic, I have repeatedly implemented complex biological core facilities and now high-throughput biological sample preparation. 18 years experience bringing new instrumentation to genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, and cell biology.

Program is focusing on the effects of Low Dose Radiation in individual mouse strains, as well as in stem cell development. Have also worked with colleagues to use microarrays for understanding the effects of nanofiber impalement on cellular recovery and gene expression. I have developed our bioinformatics resources, and am applying those to interest in miRNA regulation of gene expression. Recently organized 12 departments across 4 colleges to implement a Bioinformatics Certification Program at OSU. Have implemented new bionformatics software and developed these in collaboration with the high-performance computing center.
