Benoit Pellan’s Summary

Rich-media and interactive services are still spreading slowly in our multimedia environment. The most universal multimedia interface, the web page displayed in a browser, now faces a large spectrum of technologies to propose rich-media features (AJAX, Flash, SMIL, SVG) but still quite a lot of web sites persist in relying on traditional HTML technologies. Mobile phones only start giving access to the multimedia experience and on-demand video portals. PMP have powerful multimedia features: games, video, music, Wi-Fi access but few suitable services. Advanced multimedia applications can even be designed for very specific platforms such as the Apple's IPhone but content providers would dream of a single format that addresses almost all platforms.

The convergence of multimedia handsets is an on-going but never-ending process. The interest of my research consists in filling the gap between ubiquitous rich-media expectations and providers capacity to propose multimedia services.

Benoit Pellan’s Specialties:

Advanced Multimedia services in constrained environments.
Multimedia services in heterogeneous environments.

Multimedia standards: MPEG, JPEG
Broadcasting standards: DAB, T-DMB
Network IETF standards: IP, RTP, RTSP, TCP, UDP
Interactive multimedia standards: HTML, MPEG-4 BIFS, SMIL, SVG

Benoit Pellan’s Experience

  • Technical Training Engineer

    Ina

    (Government Agency; Government Administration industry)

    October 2007Present (2 years 3 months)

The Audio-Visual National Institute (INA) archives all French TV and Radio programs (see http://www.ina.fr/) and also proposes technical training. I am personally involved in professional trainings about MPEG technologies and Media Broadcast:
    - MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) in Broadcast
    - Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broacasting (T-DMB) for Digital Radio

  • Ph.D. Candidate

    Telecom ParisTech

    (Educational Institution; Telecommunications industry)

    October 2006Present (3 years 3 months)

My ongoing Ph.D. tackles optimization issues related to broadcasted multimedia services. My research focuses on constrained and heterogeneous environments where a large variety of multimedia handheld terminals are on the market and narrow media bandwidth is available.

One expected application field for such researches is Digital Visual Radio and experimental results are published in ICME'08, DocEng'08, WIAMIS'09 and MTAP Journal (July 2009).

  • Research Engineer

    RTL

    (Media Production industry)

    October 2006Present (3 years 3 months)

Digital radio revolution has begun in France and there is no doubt that new radio services will face the great expectations of users for this popular media. One major challenge for digital radio programs is multimedia enhancement towards 'a digital visual radio'.

My contribution at RTL focuses on investigating digital radio technologies (DRM, DAB, T-DMB) and evaluating advanced multimedia services (Video and MPEG-4 BIFS services on T-DMB) through demonstrators and experiments for the GRN (Digital Radio Group).

As part of the Digital Radio team of RTL, I am also involved in the design and optimization of the architecture of RTL multimedia production chain for live radio services broadcasted on air and online.

  • Research Assistant

    Telecom ParisTech

    (Educational Institution; Telecommunications industry)

    May 2004September 2006 (2 years 5 months)

As a research assistant at TELECOM ParisTech, I have contributed to the specification, development, integration and validation of an on-demand multimedia platform. This Client/Server architecture has been elaborated as part of the DANAE (Dynamic and distributed Adaptation of scalable multimedia coNtent in a context-Aware Environment) IST European project (http://danae.rd.francetelecom.com)

DANAE outputs result from a close cooperation of industrial partners (France Telecom, T-Systems, Siemens) and european research institutes.

The adaptation architecture of the DANAE project experiments recent technical advances within MPEG and I have been personally involved in the standardisation of MPEG-21 DIA (Amd1).

My research contributions have been validated through the open source MPEG-4 tools of GPAC project (http://gpac.sourceforge.net) and Apple’s Darwin Streaming Server and published in international conferences: EuMob'06 and WIAMIS'07.

  • Intern

    Texas Instruments

    (Public Company; Telecommunications industry)

    August 2002August 2003 (1 year 1 month)

During this one-year internship, I have participated in the port of a JPEG2000 image decoding algorithm in C programming on the TMS320C55x Texas Instrument DSP of the OMAP 1510 multimedia platform (dedicated to mobile phones).

My contribution has focused on algorithm proposals to leverage the dual processor functionalities of the OMAP 1510 chipset (AMR925T/TMS320C55x), assembly programming of critical loops, optimization of the data flow through DMA, setup of automated testing procedures...

This project has been conducted in France (Wireless Terminals Business Unit) in cooperation with research and development centers of Texas Instruments in Japan and in the United States.
