Visual Designer at Clearleft Ltd
Brighton, United Kingdom
A Graphic Designer specialising in website design and development, I deliver beautiful visual interface design, information architecture and HTML programming. I'm a keen advocate of web standards and best practices, and actively follow latest discussions in this area.
I grew up in the UK and studied Graphic Design at Cumbria Institute of the Arts between 1999-2002, before joining a small web marketing agency called Orange Vision in 2004. Here I lead the companies adoption of web standards and accessible design practices.
In 2006 I moved to the United States to take on the Lead Designer role at Ning, Inc., a Silicon Valley start-up based in Palo Alto California. My design direction and standards guidance for it's social web applications, helped the company become host to the largest number of social networks on the Internet.
After a brief stint as a full-time freelance designer (working predominantly with US-based technology start-ups) I joined Brighton based Clearleft in June 2009 to help make the web better.
Standards based (X)HTML and CSS, Fireworks, Illustrator, Flash. Print based packages such as InDesign and QuarkXpress. Visual and interaction design, corporate identity, page layout, writing.

In October 2005, myself, Simon Jobling, Chris Lysaght and Jon Roobottom set about founding the Multipack -– a community for web developers and designers in the Midlands.
At its core, the Multipack is about socialising and making new friends. But it is also a forum for discussion, inspiration and a network of talented Web professionals, all of whom are looking to bring the best of what the Web has to offer, not only to their own lives and work, but to others' as well.
We currently meet up on the second Saturday of each month at the Old Joint Stock pub in the centre of Birmingham.

July 2004 — January 2006 (1 year 7 months)
Appointed to work at growing web marketing company to develop solutions for high profile clients within the Estate Agency, Healthcare, Recruitment and Financial industries.
Primarily responsible for defining the structure and design of websites and their development using CSS and (X)HTML. Other responsibilities included the production of associated print work when required.
Ignited a 'web standards' revolution, that saw the company adopt a policy of building websites which adhered to published web standards, and that gave greater focus to web accessibility.
BA(Hons) , Graphic Design , 1999 — 2002
A three year course programme, undertaking a series of imaginative briefs that addressed specific themes and design specialisms whilst allowing development of technical skills. Final year included a major, self-negotiated design project that required research, evaluation and a formal presentation at assessment and degree show.
A selection of my work was also chosen by the college for exhibition at D&AD's 'New Blood' student showcase in 2002.
