Senior Interaction Designer

Eventbrite

Privately Held; 51-200 employees; Internet industry

January 2012February 2013 (1 year 2 months) San Francisco Bay Area

Eventbrite is an online platform that enables and supports online event creation, promotion and ticket sales.

Working in a start-up I have adapted to the fast-pace and immersed myself across teams. I have become an integral part of an organisation and have led the strategic direction of products. My mobile experience now extends across platforms and form factors.

Success: merging two products into one universal app
I led the research, strategy, design and user testing of the new product to create one universal app that worked on any form factor for iOS and Android. In particular, I:
• created extensive wireframes to merge functionality from the Eventbrite Entry Manager app with the Eventbrite At The Door iPad app; and
• demonstrated that a single, universal app will reduce user confusion, enable event organizers to use either a tablet or phone and streamline development effort.

Success: creating a consumer experience on mobile
I also worked on building out the consumer experience for the Eventbrite app. Over the course of two release cycles in a fast paced Agile team, I added search and browse features, and work is underway to incorporate social features such as Facebook. Taking a key lead role, I:
• led the user research, user testing, interaction design and usability of the app; and
• oversaw daily downloads of the Eventbrite iPhone app treble from an average of 2049 for the previous version to 5818 for the current version of the app.

Success: redesigning the core UI of Eventbrite
One of the smaller projects I worked on was the redesign of the UI for the Event Creation page. I was charged with examining the existing UI to see if the number of elements could be reduced or simplified. In completing this project, I:
• conducted a review of the UI and successfully reduced the number of elements on the form a user had to interact with; and
• streamlined the UI and identified new, more usable and dynamic common features.

Senior User Experience Consultant

Stamford Interactive

Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Information Technology and Services industry

January 2008September 2011 (3 years 9 months) Canberra Area, Australia

Stamford Interactive is one of Australia's leading UX businesses. It consults to Australia's largest companies and to governments.

It is in this role that my UX experience has grown. Adopting a user-centred design approach, I participate in research, evaluation and design. This includes focus groups, stakeholder interviews, accessibility reviews, user testing, information architecture, wireframing, visual design as well as guide and specification document writing.

Success: enriching online products for web and mobile
Contracted to Sensis for six months early in 2011, I developed new products and revitalized existing ones for White Pages online and mobile (iPad, Android, iPhone). Playing a key role in the leadership team of a multi-million dollar agile project, I:
- lead the design through multiple release cycles to deliver on-time and within budget. Refreshed product designs to help the White Pages team accelerate their sales within weeks of going live.

Success: interpreting and communicating complex systems
The Australian Electoral Commission’s system for general enrolment and election support was aimed at delivering improved capability for users. Charged with investigating the usability of the system, I presented to senior government stakeholders from contextual inquiries and research that I conducted from around the country. Specifically, I:
- adapted to local conditions quickly by learning and seeking information from relevant knowledge sources, and
- communicated findings and recommendations clearly (verbally and written) that concisely captured users’ thoughts and actions in an honest way.

Visual and Interaction Designer

Freelance

September 2007January 2008 (5 months) Sydney and Melbourne

Following a four-month overseas holiday I formed a freelance design business, Chalk Farm Design, and took a number of short-term contract designer roles. My two-month contract at Real Estate Australia Group is an example of my work during this period. There, I:
- successfully developed consistent brand execution across the web particularly on the realestate.com.au website, and redesigned the email alert system,
- designed front-end solutions in accordance with functional specifications, and
- employed my development skills in HTML/CSS to make corrections and build simple and functional interfaces.

Visual and Interaction Designer

Sensis

Public Company; 1001-5000 employees; Marketing and Advertising industry

December 2005May 2007 (1 year 6 months) Melbourne Area, Australia

Working with the Concept & Design team, I influenced cost-efficient, high quality, and engaging designs for Sensis' suite of online sites, particularly Yellow Pages, White Pages, sensis.com.au, GoStay and CitySearch.

Success: an entry into user experience
The conceptualisation and design of the Yellow Pages Workflow Integration web application in late 2005 was my entry point into user experience. I designed the tool, which was needed to address a perceived user problem. In bringing the tool into reality I:
- conducted user research through workshops, process mapping, task flows and detailed mock-ups;
- engaged with key stakeholders and users to define strategy, communicate design approach and incorporate feedback from users; and
- developed training modules and conducted one-on-one training and small workshops for users and team members.

Success: designing a user-friendly interface
Working in an agile environment with developers and supported by a senior interaction designer over five months, I developed sketches, features, wireframes, interactions and visual design mock-ups whilst working closely with users of the product. I successfully:
- designed a new tool that would aid the transition of the Yellow Pages taxonomy, which was shifting from print and online based rapidly into the mobile space.
