Pat is a founding member of Valorem Law Group, a litigation law firm with the goal of revolutionizing the relationship between law firms and their clients. Pat began his career at an AmLaw 100 firm, spending 18 years ascending the ranks to equity partner. In 2000, he took his practice to Butler Rubin Saltarelli & Boyd. Butler Rubin, a spin-off of Winston & Strawn, was considered one of Chicago’s top litigation boutiques. Soon after starting, Pat was elected to serve on the firm’s Management Committee. He was responsible for many changes in the firm, including its award-winning client service program. The President of ALM Media observed that the firm “played much bigger than its size,” and another industry observer coined the phrase “muscle boutique” to describe the Butler Rubin practice. But while many changes were instituted, the firm remained committed to working by the hour, and like other firms, its hourly rates continued to escalate with no end in sight.
Believing that fees should be fixed, margins managed, and that performance should be a key factor in pay, Pat recruited the other founders of Valorem and commenced operations on January 1, 2008. Because a lawyer’s skill in the courtroom tends to play a material role in settlements, one common trait among the people Pat recruited is that all are outstanding courtroom lawyers. Pat’s own courtroom record is one of results and distinction. But because most cases are resolved and clients many times prefer the certainty of settlement, another common trait among Valorem’s founders is that litigation is a distraction from the client’s primary business objectives—an economic problem to be resolved on economic terms. Pat has pioneered the use of Early Case Assessment and budgeting tools. One client introduced Pat to decision trees, and Pat has applied the tool to all clients and matters.
