Norman Clarke’s Summary

Experience: I have founded several moderately successful startups and also worked for a few that provided... ummm... more "learning opportunities" than profit. I've always worked for smaller companies because that's what I love to do.

Goals: To finally hit that home run out of the park. To always be working on something interesting and never lose the love for what I do. Also, to get paid for doing that.

Norman Clarke’s Specialties:

Ruby, Ruby on Rails, Lua, Linux, OS X, FreeBSD, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Java, J2EE, PHP, Apache, JBoss, XHTML/CSS etc. Figuring out how to glue together disparate technologies in creative and functional ways.

    ePersonals Inc.

(Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Computer Software industry)

    July 2002January 2005 (2 years 7 months)

Starting from zero, I conceived, designed, implemented, managed and sold the ePersonals online personal site with 3 other friends. It was one of the greatest learning experiences of my life to date. I did all of the architectural work, the database development, systems administration, and a significant chunk of the software development as well.

    Combimatrix

(Public Company; 51-200 employees; CBMX; Computer Software industry)

    June 2000July 2002 (2 years 2 months)

I was brought in to develop the database layer of the applications Combimatrix was working on at the time, and also do some network and systems administration on the side. I got to work on some interesting stuff, including a cobbled-together but blazing fast cluster of machines running Mosix for some CPU-intensive gene sequence analysis software. At Combi I also ended up learning a lot about Java programming and began moving away from hardware and databases, and more towards software development.

Norman Clarke’s Education

  • University of Connecticut

    Linguistics September 1998May 1999

Spent one year in the graduate linguistics program before deciding it wasn't for me and started a career in programming. It was a productive year however and find myself using the knowledge I picked up there from time to time.

  • University of Massachusetts Boston

    BA , Hispanic Studies, Linguistics , 19901995

The Spanish department at UMass Boston offered me the chance to pursue several independent studies during my BA, including being one of 5 students to participate in an experimental linguistics course taught by Noam Chomsky at MIT. Although I graduated with a degree in Hispanic Studies I pursued a great deal of coursework in Linguistics with my advisor Esther Torrego, and after graduation went on to work towards a PhD in Linguistics at the University of Connecticut. I was somewhat of a professional student and took many classes in German, philosophy and music.
