Nikki Mirghafori’s Summary

Dr. Nikki Mirghafori is a technology consultant for challenging machine learning problems with humanistic relevance. She has over 16 years of experience in research and development in academia and industry in computer sciences, specifically in automatic speech and speaker recognition, machine learning, and statistical pattern recognition.

Nikki received a PhD in Computer Science from UC Berkeley in 1998. After a short post-doctoral period at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI), she worked at Nuance as a research engineer, conducting both research and development in cutting-edge speaker verification and speech recognition technology. After Nuance, Nikki returned to ICSI in 2003 as a Senior Research Scientist, where she was the principal investigator/key personnel for a number of federally funded (NSF, DARPA, DTO, ITIC) research programs in speech technology. At ICSI, she managed a vibrant Speaker Recognition group, advised and mentored post-docs and graduate students, co-taught classes at UC Berkeley, and led and participated in international collaborations and technology evaluations. In 2007, she took a contemplative leave-of-absence from high tech, and as a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley's Psychology Department, undertook first-person experiential research on the nature of mind, through rigorous Buddhist meditation training in the US and Asia.

Nikki has published almost 40 scientific articles, holds patents in speech, has served as referee for numerous journals and conferences, as well as various boards for the IEEE.
