Ph.D., Anthropology, 1993 — 2002
I conducted anthropological research in Mali. The town of Diamou had weak political leadership and my oral history research traced the problems back to the colonial period. The French colonizers disrupted the political system and made the leaders dependent on the colonial authorities. Before that, these leaders depended on their own subjects to maintain their rule.
