Nico Declercq was born in Belgium in 1975. He has received his BS degree in Physics from the Catholic University of Louvain – Campus Kortrijk (KULAK) in 1996 and has received his MS degree in Physics (Astrophysics) from the Catholic University of Louvain (KUL) in 2000. He obtained his PhD degree in Engineering Physics from Ghent University (UG) in 2005, Summa Cum Laude and with Congratulations from the Jury (international PhD committee). After his doctorate, he was granted a Postdoctoral Fellowship by the Belgian National Science Foundation. He joined the Georgia Tech faculty in August 2006.
He has a tenure track appointment as Assistant Professor with the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering in Atlanta GA, USA, with primary duties at the Georgia Tech Lorraine Campus in Metz-France (at the International UMI Georgia Tech – CNRS 2958 laboratory).
Declercq received the International Dennis Gabor Award 2006 and the ICA Early Career Award 2007 from the International Commission for Acoustics "For outstanding contributions to ultrasonics, particularly for studies of propagation and diffraction of acoustic waves".
Declercq is a member of the editorial board of the Open Acoustics Journal (Bentham Scientific publishers Ltd). He is also a Young Scientists Deputy Member of the International Congress on Ultrasonics (ICU). The ICU is the World’s largest congress on ultrasonics and originates from The World Congress on Ultrasonics (WCU) merged with Elsevier’s Ultrasonics International (UI). In addition, he is guest editor for Elsevier’s Ultrasonics journal.
The global goal is to understand the interaction of sound and ultrasound with materials aiming at nondestructive evaluation of materials.
