I was born in Chalfont St Giles in Buckinghamshire.
I began my professional career as a trainee journalist before moving to Brussels to work as a development aid and trade expert in the European Union.
In 2004 I lectured part time at Sheffield and Cambridge Universities.

Liberal Democrats Shadow Home Secretary 2006 - 2007
As Shadow Home Secretary I tried to resist the erosion of our civil liberties by the current government, this included proposing a Freedom Bill to repeal unnecessary and illiberal legislation, campaigning against Identity Cards and the retention of innocent people’s DNA, and arguing against excessive counter-terrorism legislation. I still do. I have also campaigned for prison reform and a liberal approach to immigration, and defended the Human Rights Act against ongoing attacks from across the political spectrum.
