Nick Clegg’s Summary

I was born in Chalfont St Giles in Buckinghamshire.

I began my professional career as a trainee journalist before moving to Brussels to work as a development aid and trade expert in the European Union.

In 2004 I lectured part time at Sheffield and Cambridge Universities.

European Parliament
Member of the European Parliament
1999 - 2004 Employed by the residents of East Midlands as MEP for East Midlands. Trade and Industry spokesman for the Liberal grouping.

Liberal Democrats Shadow Home Secretary 2006 - 2007
As Shadow Home Secretary I tried to resist the erosion of our civil liberties by the current government, this included proposing a Freedom Bill to repeal unnecessary and illiberal legislation, campaigning against Identity Cards and the retention of innocent people’s DNA, and arguing against excessive counter-terrorism legislation. I still do. I have also campaigned for prison reform and a liberal approach to immigration, and defended the Human Rights Act against ongoing attacks from across the political spectrum.

Liberal Democrats Shadow Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs 2005 - 2006

Leader of the Liberal Democrats December 2007 - Present
UK Parliament
Member of Parliament May 2005 - Present Sheffield Hallam
Employed by the residents of Sheffield Hallam. I won this election with a majority of 8,682.

I am married to Miriam Gonzalez Durantez and have three young children.
