In 2009, I led the initiative to begin the rewrite of newspaper's website from PHP to Ruby on Rails, convincing stakeholders of the efficiency gains of Rails as well as the advantages of the framework's growing popularity, especially amongst college-age developers. As we built up the team for the rewrite, I took a backseat role, providing advice on technical and project strategy.
Prior to the rewrite, I was part of the 2009 Directorate of The Dartmouth during the 2008 calendar year and was officially responsible for developing the newspaper's website. I spent the majority of my time building the backend administration interface for the staff of the newspaper, as well as grooming the PHP framework behind the site - only to throw that out when a rewrite in Rails was clearly beneficial to the newspaper.
Prior to my appointment to the Directorate, I rewrote the newspaper's website with a custom framework from a legacy PHP codebase as well as introduced a new visual design to the site. I also wrote news articles, took photographs, created news graphics and did layout for the paper.
