Nelson, a lifelong Queens resident, attended Columbia College and Queens College, City University of New York, from which he received a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, in Political Science in 1985. He received his Juris Doctor degree from St. John’s University School of Law in 1988, and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1988, the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York in 1989, and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in 1990.
Nelson practiced in the private sector as a litigation attorney in the areas of plaintiffs and defense negligence for six years, from 1988-1994, handling professional negligence, products liability, labor law, premises liability and insurance-coverage matters. He was employed by an insurance carrier, in which capacity he investigated claims, made coverage determinations, issued coverage positions, analyzed legal issues, and supervised in-house and outside counsel in defending and settling negligence cases, primarily premises liability matters. From1994, when he left the private sector, until present, Nelson has worked for the New York State Unified Court System, serving as Court Attorney to Civil Court Judges assigned to the New York City Civil and Criminal Courts, and as Principal Law Clerk to Supreme Court Justices in the New York State Supreme Court, Queens County, Civil, Guardianship and Criminal Terms.

He penned scholarly legal articles for the New York Law Journal, the New York State Bar Association Journal, the New York State Bar Association Torts, Insurance & Compensation Law Journal, the Queens County Bar Association Bulletin, and the Queens Times Ledger. St. John's Law provided a great preparation for the rigors of the NYS Bar Examination, and good coverage of NY topics in preparation for practice in NY. My fellow students by and large were a good bunch and I am pleased to see many of them in court and at various professional activities, and to network with them here.
Juris Doctor , 1988
B.A. cum laude , Political Science , 1982 — 1985
Queens College is an excellent school educationally, as well as in terms of access to the faculty, including full professors. The students are a pretty diverse and interesting group of people. The administration was responsive and flexible, willing to work with the students to overcome challenges and provide a meaningful educational experience. Notwithstanding the excellence of the education, the school is a fantastic value as well. I highly recommend it.

Columbia is an elite institution. The education was diverse and demanding. The reading is intense. The professors were pretty unapproachable and unyielding in their ways. The true value of this school, like many Ivy-League experiences, lies in your ability to network and shmooze up to the power elite, sons and daughters of the power elite, and future "world-beaters" so as to secure job connections once you graduate. At about $50,000 per year, I would not be able to send my children there, and frankly, I feel that I received much more personal attention and focus at Queens College.
Nelson was elected in 2006 to a position on the Board of Managers of the Queens County Bar Association. He serves as Associate Dean of the Queens Association Academy of Law and vice-chair of its Continuing Legal Education Committee.
Nelson is active with the New York State Bar Association's Committee on Professional Ethics and the Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law section, and the Alumni Association of St. John's University School of Law. He teaches legal medicine as an adjunct instructor in the Queens College Continuing Education-Paralegal Studies Program. He is a member of the Ukrainian American Bar Association (UABA).
Nelson serves as a Eucharistic minister at Zion Episcopal Church in Douglaston, serving on a regular basis as master of ceremonies and providing pastoral care. He is a member of the Eleanor Roosevelt Regular Democratic Club [Mark Weprin, Honey Miller], and Alfred E. Smith Democratic Club [Marge Markey and Joe Crowley] in Queens.
Nelson is married to Elizabeth, who is a principal law secretary to a Supreme Court Justice, and they have three children attending public schools in Queens County.
