Sara Small-Axe's Summary
Introduced to the dancehall reggae genre in the late-80s by a friend of a friend, I quickly became intrigued by it. Around the same time, I picked up a travel book on Jamaica from the high school library had also become interested in the country and the culture. This interest continued to grow through the years and, in '96, I made my first trip to the "Land I Love". Visiting Negril off-season, and already knowing many Jamaicans and some of the culture, I would not describe it as the typical tourist trip. After that, I longed to return, but work and family obligations made it very difficult to frequent even the local venues playing reggae music. That was until the early-2000s.
In '02, the opportunity arose to travel to Kingston and stay with extended family. A whole new world opened up to me and I have been networking in the reggae community (both locally and globally) ever since. In late-'05, I tried my hand at promoting dancehall DJ nights here in Minneapolis, and quickly found that there was very little local reggae presence online (to offer promotional support) and decided instead to focus on starting a website.
The MiNNEAPOLiS DANCEHALL™ website launched in late September '06 to a very slow start. With no prior website design/development training or experience, I started from scratch. Initially, the website was built and managed using my webhost's built-in sitebuilder, relying heavily on WYSIWYG. Having so much information I wanted to incorporate into the site, I outgrew that sitebuilder, and switched over to Joomla CMS (content management system) at the beginning of '10.
Without prior Joomla or formal Business training/experience, I am constantly on a learning curve: troubleshooting problems, finding new design features to add to the site, performing search engine optimization and visitor statistics analysis, and more recently, putting a focus on marketing and monetizing the MiNNEAPOLiS DANCEHALL™ brand name and website.
