Before I begin you need to know two things. Number one, the definition of my catchphrase, “ain’t nuthin’ neo about soul” and number two the definition of the type of music you will find at Mosaicthump.
“ain’t nuthin’ neo about soul“, should be self explanatory but it is not to most people. The term neo-soul is industry created. It seems that they are always trying to manufacture a way to make more money. The fact is, soul music is experiencing a resurgence these days. Our generation was beginning to miss music reminiscent of our parents favorites like Sly and the Family Stone, Earth Wind and Fire, Rufus, Donnie Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Phyllis Hyman and Maze; just to name a few. The truth is, what they are calling neo-soul is, “a spiritual revival of decades old underground funk“. Did that look familiar? It should, I have adopted it as the best definition of music in this genre. Now you are ready to go on.

My goal is to bring you more interviews and soul music, relevant news and reviews than you are going to be able to handle. I hope that you will become the person in your family that everyone turns to for musical related questions. I have met some really cool people from around the world and they have graciously agreed to provide me with content from time to time. In my features section, I have give my peeps from around the world an opportunity to spout off about whatever they want (yes, I did say whatever they want!)
I think the coolest thing about what I do, is talking to soul music artists both indie and mainstream. I get them to talk to me on the phone about the things that we all really want to know. I prefer to call what we do “kickin’ it“. During these conversations we play music, laugh a whole lot and get rather candid sometimes; you get to hear it all right here. You will also have the opportunity to download your favorite interviews so that you can listen whenever you want. -

This time it featured Maya Azucena wsg Russell Taylor & introduces Trizonna McClendon. Once again hosted by, soulfully poetic, ButterSoulFly the ambiance will only be enhanced with the addition of Detroit’s own DJ Jim Stone.
Maya Azucena has developed a strong following due primarily to her live shows. Her sound is Soul meets Hip-Hop and Funk. She has been listed in the NY Times as “Highly Recommended”. Azuzena has also been written up in the Village Voice, described as one of “the most impressive of the current hip-hop/soul/r&b diva crop,” with comparisons to Chaka Kahn.
Russell Taylor is a Philadelphia native who had no choice but to revere the authentic soul classics. From Stevie to Donnie to the O’Jays, songs of unconditional love and social commentary resonate from the fabric he grew up in. He is blues, rock and roll, hip-hop and just plain nasty funk. Mary J. A record release party for internationally known producer Nicolay, musical architect of the classic Hip-Hop Duo Foreign Exchange.
Nicolay is world renowned for his ability to use classic soul and hip-hop in a phenomenal and cohesive mix that can only be called genius. As one half of the now classic Foreign Exchange, he was instrumental in taking the hip-hop world by storm and upping the ante for every producer in the business. The resulting CD from that historic union with Phonte, “Connected,” will definitely go down as one of the must have CDs of our generation.
Nicolay has worked with the kings and queens of underground soul and hip-hop, such as Alice Smith, Kenn Starr, 6th Sense, Roy Ayers, Cesar Comanche, Little Brother, Darien Brockington, Black Spade, Yazarah, and Sy Smith just to name a few. His newest effort entitled “Here” will most certainly solidify his position in the industry, while providing insight to this master’s diverse repertoire.
