(Privately Held; Translation and Localization industry)
September 2008 — September 2009 (1 year 1 month)
In addition to my studies at Portsmouth, I opted to take a 'sandwich year' work placement between my second year and my final year. Working initially as part of the Marketing team, my role was then expanded and I spent the majority of my time working in Business Development.
As a part of the Business Development team I contributed to shaping the future direction of MO Group International. As well as having involvement in specific activities at a project management level, I was also involved in the promotion of the overall business and the services offered by the company. This included arranging and attending meetings with potential clients and developing relationships with key contacts within both client and partner organisations.
During my time at MO Group International I gained valuable experience not just in the localisation, SEO and web design/development industries, but also in terms of professionalism, teamwork and project management.
(Retail industry)
October 2003 — September 2008 (5 years )
During my time at Horrocks I worked both part-time and full-time and had various responsibilities. A wholesale and retail greengrocer based in the Chichester area, Horrocks services a number of popular restaurants within West Sussex as well as providing fresh fruit and vegetables to the local community through its store. The focus is on high quality, preferably local produce.
My roles included:
- Dealing with suppliers
- Working in the shop front
- Attending local produce fairs
- Product placement and stock rotation
- Handling customer complaints
- Carrying out deliveries
- Assisting with stock replenishment
- Opening and closing the premises
- Assisting with marketing activities
I enjoyed my time at Horrocks and as well as gaining knowledge about the retail industry, I also learnt key skills like customer interaction and teamwork.
BSc (Hons) E-Commerce and Internet Systems , Information Technology, Information Systems, Sociology, Management, History of Computing, Ethics , 2006 — 2010 (expected)
My course at Portsmouth involves the study of both business oriented subjects and more technically focussed subjects. In terms of the more technical side, studies have included: web design & development, webserver management, databases and human-computer interaction. Business oriented studies have included: project management, business ethics, professionalism and career development and e-commerce operations.
In addition to this I have been able to study a range of optional subjects that have broadened my knowledge, including:
- Epistemology
- Work and the Information Society
- The Industrialisation of Society
- The History of Computing
- Languages (French, German & Italian)
During the second semester of my final year I intend to further develop my language skills by taking part in the Erasmus exchange program and studying at the Université du Havre in France.
My main pastime is fencing, I fence at a number of clubs in both Hampshire and West Sussex and compete at as many tournaments around the country as I can. In 2005 I was one of four founder members of Chichester Community Fencing Club and was instrumental in acquiring a £9,000 Lottery Grant used to purchase equipment. I trained to become a coach and have been coaching at the club ever since. In 2008 we decided to incorporate the club into a 'community interest company' to ensure it remains a not-for-profit organisation. So far I have served as both the secretary and a director of the company.
Qualified fencing coach, registered with the British Fencing Association and England Fencing.
