Mary Jane (MJ) Broadbent has been creating elegant solutions to complex information design problems for over 20 years. With an extensive background in corporate print communications, MJ began working in interactive design in 1996. She was named the first Director of Information Architecture at Icon Nicholson in January 2000, where she helped establish IA and human-computer interaction (HCI) as an integral part of the strategic project development process.
MJ's practical expertise and leadership in the realm of user experience design has benefited organizations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bookspan (now DirectGroup Bertelsmann), Empire BlueCrossBlueShield, H&R Block, The McGraw-Hill Companies (including Standard & Poor's), Pfizer, Sony Electronics, Thomas Publishing, and the United Nations. MJ has also designed print campaigns for a variety of Fortune 500 clients. She is is an organized team player who embodies a strong balance of logic and aesthetics.
MJ co-authored and taught the seminal online course “Information Design” at Sessions.edu, has guest-lectured on information architecture at Columbia University's School of Continuing Education, New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, and at the School of Visual Arts. She holds a B.S. in Graphic Design from the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning and is a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), the Usability Professionals Association (UPA), the Information Architecture Institute (IAI), and the Interaction Design Association (IxDA) for which she is a steering committee program leader for New York City.
