Mary Jane (MJ) Broadbent has been creating elegant solutions to complex information design problems for over 20 years. With an extensive background in corporate print communications, MJ began working in what is now known as interaction design in 1996. She was named the first Director of Information Architecture (IA) in January 2000 by Silicon Alley pioneer agency Icon Nicholson, where she helped establish IA and human-computer interaction (HCI) as an integral part of the strategic project development process.
MJ's practical expertise and leadership in the realm of user experience design has benefited organizations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bookspan (now DirectGroup Bertelsmann), the College Board, Empire BlueCrossBlueShield, H&R Block, Johnson & Johnson, The McGraw-Hill Companies (including Standard & Poor's), Pfizer, Sony Electronics, Thomas Publishing, and the United Nations. MJ has also designed print campaigns for a variety of Fortune 500 clients. She is is an organized team player who embodies a strong balance of logic and aesthetics.
MJ co-authored and taught the seminal online course “Information Design” at Sessions.edu, has guest-lectured at Columbia University's School of Continuing Education, New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, and at the School of Visual Arts. She holds a B.S. in Graphic Design from the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning. She is a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), the Information Architecture Institute (IAI), the International Forum of Visual Practitioners (IFVP), the User Experience Professionals Association (UXPA), and is a Director emeritus of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA).

Senior UX team lead for redesign of global IT self-service portal at Johnson & Johnson. The portal is made available in twelve languages and comprises a knowledge base in tandem with transactional request forms that equip J&J associates, partners and consultants world-wide with technology services necessary for their everyday work. Project responsibilities included defining and managing work processes for combined team of Slalom consultants and client-side service request experts/owners, all aspects of global end-user research, and all design deliverables across complex IT support service business lines. Also managed on-site coordination with a very talented client-side solutions architecture team. Evangelized and demonstrated the benefits of user-centered design.
Member of leadership steering body guiding the maturation -- through multiple engagement platforms -- of the global IxDA professional community in service of its mission to advance the practice of interaction design. During this tenure, served in the office of Treasurer managing global organizational finance of nearly $1M USD. Assisted in selecting and on-boarding IxDA's first Executive Director (first full-time compensated staff role).
Community manager and general business operations manager for diverse global professional forum providing discussion, education, and training to elevate multiple visual practices as effective communication and engagement tools for business and learning.
Recruited and co-managed a group of more than a dozen geographically distributed volunteers (as a volunteer myself) to plan for and execute on all aspects of hosting Interaction11 in Boulder, CO -- a four-day conference that is global non-profit IxDA's annual professional meeting. The conference sold out three months early and totaled over 625 attendees. Ticket sales combined with major industry sponsors such as Microsoft, Adobe and Dell contributed to an operating budget of over half a million dollars.
Liquidnet is the global institutional trading network trusted by more than 740 of the world’s top asset managers to execute their trades in size. Responsible for user research, conceptual design, prototyping, and design development of proprietary software and related services. Co-founder of the Liquidnet Experience Design Center of Excellence.
Responsible for UX design, user testing, detailed UI specifications and enhancements of software tools used by ratings analysts company-wide. Practice Manager across a group of four User Experience designers.
UX Lead on multi-disciplinary team responsible for integrating online operations and content management onto a single delivery platform for more than 30 Book-of-the-Month club websites, resulting in a uniform user experience using a template-based approach. Pro-actively defined and socialized a collaborative work process including key deliverables many of which were new to this organization. Led iterative cross-functional team activities including business analysis and documentation, e-commerce best practices, information architecture, user flows, interface design, technical validation, usability testing, and detailed functional requirements.
Named the first Director of IA at this Silicon Alley pioneer agency (originally Tom Nicholson Associates). Established the information architecture (IA) and human-computer interaction (HCI) functional practice areas after Icon Medialab acquired Nicholson NY. Responsible for recruiting, professional development, establishing methodology, and the advancement of user-centered design practices along with documentation standards. The practice area grew from three to fourteen practitioners during my tenure. Also participated in new business strategy and development.
