Mitch Pirtle’s Summary

I started my career in hardware engineering at Apple Computer and then Sun Microsystems, and in the late 80s I became enamored with the challenges that occurred when you combined people with technology. As such I entered into software development and interface design, with a focus on emerging technologies - I wanted to have every possible avenue available to produce the best systems available. As soon as Web technologies were available, I'd completely walked away from the fat-client world of development and have focused on web application development ever since, including some high traffic sites such as ClassMates.com.

From the technical perspective I am most skilled and experienced working with high-traffic sites, with a strong development discipline that centers on sound implementation practices, performance and massive scaling, security, and code reuse.

I've since branched out to also cover both business and strategic areas, such as online marketing, brand strategy and product development.

However my real focus at present is bringing all of this varied experience together to promote emerging technologies to the non-technical, while still keeping my hands dirty in the implementation of said technologies. I enjoy the challenges of setting up development teams and starting companies.

Mitch Pirtle’s Specialties:

Web technologies, database technologies, open source (industry and technologies), information security, product development, enterprise architecture planning, technologies/tools evaluation and research.

Mitch Pirtle’s Experience

  • Lead Web Developer

    The N / MTV Networks

    (Internet industry)

    February 2007Present (1 year 6 months)

Designed and led the re-implementation of a high-traffic website (40M views weekly). Based on the LAMP stack, and utilizing the latest in frameworks and development methodologies, I also helped setup the development environment and standards, as well as coordinate the development efforts of both technical and non-technical team members.

  • Technology Evangelist, Founder

    Spacemonkey Laboratories, LLC

(Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Internet industry)

    June 2000Present (8 years 2 months)

Providing both technical and marketing services for online business, with a focus on open source technologies. On the marketing side SML provides assistance with campaigns, brand strategies and product development; and regarding technologies we are quite comfortable with Joomla and other open source platforms, with an eye to performance, scale, and security.

Both strategic and implementation services are available for software development and systems integration.

  • Co-founder

    New York Joomla User Group

    (Internet industry)

    20072008 (1 year)

  • Co-founder and CEO

    IVIVIO

(Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Internet industry)

    January 2005April 2007 (2 years 4 months)

IVIVIO was originally founded as JamboWorks in 2005 to provide professional services and products based on the Mambo platform, and then Joomla. It was founded with other core developers on the open source project.

Areas of expertise include online commerce, digital publishing, databases, webservers, transaction processing systems, information security infrastructure, application development environments, and operational centers.

  • Core Developer, Co-founder

    Joomla!, Open Source Matters, Inc.

    (Non-Profit; 11-50 employees; Internet industry)

    September 2005June 2006 (10 months)

The award-winning content management system formerly known as Mambo, now known as Joomla! and is as active as ever. Joomla! is a perfect fit for small organizations with limited technical resources, and also makes an excellent application platform for web-based deployment of sophisticated, business-driven systems.

The current version (1.5 at the time of this writing) has been expanded to incorporate an advanced framework, making Joomla! an excellent platform for enterprise-class application development.

  • Core Developer

    Mambo Content Management System

(Non-Profit; 11-50 employees; Information Technology and Services industry)

    March 2004September 2005 (1 year 7 months)

Industry leading PHP-based Content Management System (CMS), my role is focused on development of database abstraction layers, data models, and systems administration.

  • Founder, CEO

    Buzzwerks Inc.

(Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Information Technology and Services industry)

    December 1995June 2000 (4 years 7 months)

I completely dedicated myself to the web and related technologies late in 1995, and struck out on my own in earnest. Buzzwerks was formed just in time for the first boom, and was involved in the creation and successes of quite a few efforts, including high-traffic sites such as ClassMates and evaluation of emerging technologies for Starbucks.

Based in Seattle, the company grew but ultimately needed more than one partner, and as the boom was in full-swing, everyone was quite absorbed with their own companies at the time.

Although successful all along, I decided to discontinue Buzzwerks when we relocated to Europe.
