Mirko Vidovic’s Summary

I have been using computers from 1982 and I always kept my motivation when it came to dealing with new technologies. I remember browsing the Usenet comp.* newsgroups as soon as 1992. The following year, I installed Linux for the first time (this was a Sunsite/FTP mirror on a CD and I had to rawrite it onto enough floppies to get it ready for installation). I began designing web sites as soon as 1993 in HTML in 1993, and in Java as soon as 1995. I also worked as a computing teacher and in the print industry. I also have a strong background in Lingo which I taught to young professionals in 1996. In 1997, I migrated the Ecco website to reflect its new Adecco brand. In 1998, I was working in the very Alcatel Alsthom Research group which announced DSL. I then left to Germany where I worked in the performance team optimizing Mannesmann's Arcor billing system before leaving to Switzerland where I now work as System Administrator, Troubleshooter and Network Services integrator. In parallel, I work as a journalist, as a movie maker and as a musician with both small Gregorian vocal ensemble, rock bands, electronic acts or massive orchesters. I now speak 3 languages, have lived and worked in 4 countries and just couldn't live without an highly dynamic work environment: No matter the stress, the routine is worse.

Mirko Vidovic’s Experience

  • System Administrator

    Bundesamt für Informatik und Telekommunikation

(Government Agency; 1001-5000 employees; Government Administration industry)

    January 2005Present (3 years 9 months)

I am currently working there as a Systemspezialist (level III). My duties consist of application and server management. As the B.I.T. is a federal office, I am then working with huge systems which deal with any Federal matter, such as Tax, Customs, Topography, Accounting and Transportation. The systems I administer are mostly Linux-based (even though I also happen to deal with AIX, HP-UX, Tru64 and Solaris). The applications they run can be based on any combination of PHP/MySQL, Apache, Samba, WebLogic, Tomcat, but also proprietary developments or Perl scripts. The position also involve many contacts and, because the managers often are military officers, rigorous discipline.

  • CTO

    Callet & Vidovic

(Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Online Media industry)

    November 2004Present (3 years 11 months)

My wife and I incorporated in order to get a legal structure which allow us to propose our services in various services, from anything Internet-related to other media-related services. As of yet we've worked a lot with video, recording concerts and putting these onto DVDs, we also sold many quality web sites to small organisations or companies.

  • CEO

    eQ R&D, Corp.

(Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Computer & Network Security industry)

    January 2001December 2004 (4 years)

eQ R&D was a great company. Based in Bern, Switzerland and funded by myself, it had its merchandising and logistics in France and Macedonia and its labs in Tomsk, Russia. We worked on many hardware and software projects and also spawned the CACKO Linux project to which I also contributed by developing Qt/C++ software.
Among thhe hardware projects, a lot were about ARM-based embedded systems which assembly language I have been practising since the Acorn years, in 1995.

  • System Administrator

    Die Schweizerische Post

(Government Agency; 10,001 or more employees; Telecommunications industry)

    September 1999November 2004 (5 years 3 months)

I have been hired there as a Systemspezialist (level III). After a Sun Cluster 2.1 training at Sun's, I have been in charge of the following productive multi-million clients applications : Yellownet (e-Banking), E-Payment, BMZ/RVS (mail and packages track'n trace), Online shops, Home Page Post (Corporate site and intranet), Billing, computer security, research and development, inventory, trouble-ticket management, Postauto (public transportation) and many others.
My tasks consisted of systems purchase and installation, application setup, troubleshooting, performance tuning, Y2K testing, automation (scripting and monitoring), system hardening, backup, software patches, development support (PVCS/Ant/Java...), 24/7 support, inter-project communication and problem escalation.

  • Senior Developer

    American Management Systems GmbH

(Public Company; 10,001 or more employees; Program Development industry)

    June 1998August 1999 (1 year 3 months)

I worked in the String/Performance Tests Team where I was expected to get a complete third millenium telecom billing system up and running and to improve its performance until it met the client's requirements. This task involved 3 weeks of experimentation in HP's test laboratories, in Böblingen (Germany) where I developped a distributed Java-enabled monitoring language to access all the messages queues from a single browser window.
I also ported the complete system to HP-UX 11 after adapting and recompiling it to the newest HP ANSI C++ compiler : aCC. This involved much low-level work like libraries (RogueWave, Orbix...) recompilation. I also implemented changes in the build scripts in order to use new features (incremental linker, precompiled headers.
I finally maintained the event correction process within a development team and I developed an Intranet database monitoring application to make my work easier.

  • Senior C++ Developer

    AMS

(Public Company; 5001-10,000 employees; Program Development industry)

    June 1998August 1999 (1 year 3 months)

  • Consultant

    Alcatel Alsthom Research

    (Telecommunications industry)

    January 1998May 1998 (5 months)

As a member of the Network Management Unit, working on a subproject of the DSL project, my work consisted of the maintenance of an HP-OpenView/Oracle Alarm management Application.
I also developped new software components and applications in C++, Pro*C and Java and have been granted the responsability to prepair the main application's migration to a later version.
In the meantime, I also worked on my group’s Intranet.

  • Java Developer

    CDSI

(Public Company; 51-200 employees; Online Media industry)

    August 1997December 1997 (5 months)

During the 5 months between August and December, I had to handle the complete realisation of CDSI's commercial Intranet from scratch. The application consists of 3 modules: a web-based user interface, a file manager and a secure bank communication module.
I managed a team of 4 persons: an administrative, a graphist, a developper and an analyst. I personally worked upon design, Java coding and NT+Linux administration. I realised the whole indexed files handling utility from scratch. It has been acknowledged as powerful, portable, secure and fast.
