Miriam E. Tucker's Summary

Diabetes is both my personal and professional passion. I have lived with type 1 diabetes since 1973, and wrote my first scholarly report on the subject in 1977 at the age of 12 (www.miriametucker.com/diabetes, last item).

I've been writing about diabetes professionally since joining the International Medical News Group in 1986. Back then, the condition wasn't recognized as the epidemic that it is today. I've seen diabetes evolve from the "Rodney Dangerfield of diseases" to one that now earns enormous respect and attention. There is never a "slow" time in the diabetes research field, and the demand for information about it never slows either.

In addition to diabetes, I also write about vaccines, infectious disease, geriatrics, pediatrics, behavioral health, public health, and a wide range of other medical topics. I especially enjoy writing about any subject for which I can provide new insight.

In March 2011, I was named by Huffington Post as one of "16 Health Experts to Check Out on Twitter." (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2morrowknight/health-and-fitness-supers_b_835642.html#s255343&title=Miriam_E_Tucker)

Miriam E. Tucker's Experience

Public Company; 5001-10,000 employees; Publishing industry

June 1986Present (26 years 1 month) Rockville, MD

Since 1986 I've had the privilege of covering clinical diabetes for IMNG's physician audiences. Since the January 2006 launch of Clinical Endocrinology News, I have delved into specialized diabetes topics such as new technologies.

Childhood and Adult vaccination is another area of expertise. I travel regularly to Atlanta to cover vaccine advisory committee meetings at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and have written extensively about new vaccines, new target groups for vaccination, vaccine shortages, and vaccine controversies.

Beyond those two specialty “beats,” I write about any and all medical subjects. Some areas I’ve covered recently include laser medicine, thoracic surgery, and hospital infection control.

I also ghostwrite a monthly column for Pediatric News on infectious disease, working closely with five specialists to craft opinion pieces in each of their own unique voices.

As IMNG has evolved into multimedia reporting, I have recorded video interviews with physicians at medical meetings by myself, and also conducted on-camera interviews when working with video staff.

Freelance

June 1986Present (26 years 1 month)

My full-time job doesn't leave a lot of room these days for freelance features, but I'm still open to the possibility if the right topic came along.

Previous non-diabetes subjects I wrote about for major newspapers include the strep throat/OCD connection, probiotics, and overmedication in the elderly (http://www.miriametucker.com/Other_Reporting.html).
