Mission President at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Greater Philadelphia Area
Retired Apple Computer and Microsoft executive (1981-1999). Currently serving as a volunteer Mission President for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the greater Philadelphia area. Check out my blog to see what this is all about. Will return to Seattle in July 2010.
Co-founder and former Chairman of Unitus (2000-2007), a Seattle-based innovative leader in the microfinance field. Unitus serves as a microfinance accelerator (think "non-profit venture capital"), helping existing microcredit lending institutions dramatically increase the number of very poor clients they serve in developing countries.
Through partnerships with 22 rapidly growing microfinance institutions, Unitus is helping over 7 million poor women and their families in India, Kenya, Tanzania, Brazil, Mexico, Cambodia, The Philippines, Indonesia and Argentina. The near term goal is to provide direct economic empowerment to 10 million families by 2015.
Unitus raises money -- as grants, debt and private equity -- and then structures this to help its partners experience rapid accelerated growth. The organization sponsors fact finding trips to rural villages and city slums in India and Kenya. These trips are open to any interested potential donor-investor. Google "Unitus" to learn all about us.
Unitus is the recepient of the Fast Company / Monitor Group Social Capitalist Award for taking an innovative, entrepreneurial, business-minded approach to alleviating global poverty. Only 25 organizations received this highly selective award each year. Unitus has also received grants from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation and the Omidyar Network. The growth of Unitus is dependent upon a continued increase in donations and equity investments.
Microfinance, idea generation, synthesis and integration of complex problems, venture philanthropy, missionary work, helping others find true purpose in life.
