In 1994 Mike Butcher started writing about the business of web sites for Newspaper Focus magazine. In 1996 he joined New Media Age, then a newsletter, and in 1998 took over as editor, re-launching it from a 14 page title into a full-blown magazine. In 2000, as an executive editor, he helped launch the US-owned Industry Standard magazine in London. He went freelance in 2001 and has since written for TechCrunch, The Financial Times, The Times, The Irish Times, The Guardian, Broadcast, Marketing Week, New Media Age, Mobile Content News, Paid Content, Media Week and The New Statesman among others. He has launched or relanched publishing web sites for Media Week, UK Press Gazette, New Media Age, Flight International and Netimperative or consulted on others. In 2004 he was voted 'One of the 100 Innovators of the UK Internet Decade' by GfK NOP, the fourth-largest custom research business in the world, and E-consultancy.com. Over the last ten years he has talked about media, technology, the Internet, Startups, Web 2.0 and the mobile business on BBC News 24, BBC World, Sky News, Channel 4, GMTV, CNBC and Bloomberg, as well as working on a number of TV projects, including a documentary about technology in Hong Kong and Asia. Current projects include journalism and professional blogging, speaking at, chairing or organising events about digital media and Web 2.0, podcasting and working with media companies.
