Architecture for Improving Terrestrial Logistics based on Web of Things
- Special Issue “Selected papers from UCAmI 2011 - The 5th International Symposium on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence.” Sensors (2012)
- 2012
Authors: Miguel Castro, Antonio J. Jara, Antonio F. SkarmetaTechnological advances for improving supply chain efficiency present three key challenges for managing goods: tracking, tracing and monitoring (TTM), in order to satisfy the requirements for products such as perishable goods where the European Legislations require to ship them, within a prescribed temperature range to ensure freshness and suitability for consumption. The proposed system integrates RFID for tracking and tracing through a distributed architecture developed for heavy goods vehicles, and the sensors embedded in the SunSPOT platform for monitoring the goods transported based on the concept of the Internet of Things. This paper presents how the Internet of Things is integrated for improving terrestrial logistics offering a comprehensive and flexible architecture, with high scalability, according to the specific needs for reaching an item-level continuous monitoring solution. The major contribution from this work is the optimization of the Embedded Web Services based on RESTful (Web of Things) for the access to TTM services at any time during the transportation of goods. Specifically, it has been extended the monitoring patterns such as observe and block wise transfer for the requirements from the continuous conditional monitoring, and for the transfer of full inventories and partial ones based on conditional queries. In definitive, this work presents an evolution of the previous TTM solutions, which were limited to a trailer identification and environment monitoring, to a solution, which is able to provide an exhaustive item-level monitoring, required for several use cases. This exhaustive monitoring has required new communication capabilities through the Web of Things, which has been optimized with the use and improvement of a set of communications patterns.

An analysis of M2M platforms: challenges and opportunities for the Internet of Things
- 6th International Conference on Innovative Mobile and Internet Services in Ubiquitous Computing IMIS (2012)
- July 4, 2012
Authors: Miguel Castro, Antonio J. Jara, Antonio F. SkarmetaIoT (Internet of Things) resources could be conceived as service end-points for Machine-to-Machine (M2M) platforms, i.e. Things/Resources as a Service (TaaS or RaaS). Moreover, technologies involved in this platforms, provide to devices the needed capabilities to expose their services in a straightforward manner. Consequently, a solid, well-designed M2M/IoT platform should provide the basis for the simplified management of resources. The goal of this paper is to provide an initial analysis of the requirements for an M2M platform together with the considerations about IoT technologies, which will serve as a starting point for defining the actual services for IoT devices via M2M. Towards this direction, the current state of the art in M2M communications, in terms of standardization and already deployed platforms are taken into account, and an analysis of several of this platforms is done, showing up its main focuses and how all them have to evolve, in order to meet with upcoming requirements. The new trends about interaction between real and virtual worlds, and the challenges and opportunities identified, form the basis upon which every M2M/IoT standard platform should be built.

Analysis of the Future Internet of Things Capabilites for Continuous Temperature Monitoring of Blood Bags in Terrestrial Logistcis Systems
- 5th International Conference on Convergence and Hybrid Information Technology, ICHIT. LNCS 6935, pp. 558 - 566. Springer. Daejeon, Korea (2011)
- September 22, 2011
Authors: Miguel Castro, Antonio J. Jara, Antonio F. SkarmetaThis paper presents an analysis for the challenges and opportunities for the definition of a solution for traceability, tracking and monitoring based on Future Internet of Things to transport of goods, which require an item-level continuous monitoring solution, such as the case of perishable goods, food, medicines and dangerous goods due to the specific needs of these products in terms of environment status (humidity, lighting and temperature) during the transport, in order to preserve its integrity before, during and after the transport process. For that reason, this work describes a particular use case focused on the implementation of the solution for careful monitoring of blood bags, since this requires the communication with the items in order to control the temperature in the bags to detect that it has not been out of range, and control during the transport the temperature in the trailer in order to avoid that situation. This analysis is based on the Internet of Things to support global connectivity through the Future Internet for each one of the items, and on the Web of Things to support the monitoring of the item status and access to services at anytime during the transportation of goods through Embedded Web Services (RESTful).

Oxygen Cylinders Management Architecture based on Internet of Things
- 11th International Conference on Computational Science and Its Applications, ICCSA (2011)
- 2011
Authors: Miguel Castro, Antonio J. Jara, Miguel Angel Zamora, Antonio F. Skarmeta, Agustín Guillén Carrasco, José L. FusterSupply chain processes are being redefined and enhanced with the use of technologies based on the Internet of Things. This work presents an example of as an industrial process such as oxygen cylinders refilling and evaluation is enhanced with the use of the technologies from the Internet of Things such as RFID and 6LoWPAN, defining novel services which bring closer the industrial world to the Future Internet. Right now, the management of the oxygen cylinders is a simple task, where only some information about the oxygen cylinder is retrieved and manually managed by the operator. In this work is proposed a management application architecture for, on the one hand, automatic oxygen cylinders identification and classification, satisfying both traceability and monitoring requirements during the production process, and on the other hand, defining new management services to the operator, and for the checking of status and reception of notifications to the customer. In order to reach this, oxygen cylinders have been RFID tagged, and a Wireless Personal Device has been developed, in order to offer 6LoWPAN connectivity and an intuitive LCD touch screen for interacting with the RFID-HF reader.
