Proselytizing the power of digital media, reputation, and learning for SE Asia's businesses
Singapore
So what is the life if a business school practice track faculty member? Well, my career has been a balance of university teaching with industry consulting. Though I will always be a scholar, I do have a love for the real-world challenges of business and the feeling of accomplishment I get when helping others learn.
Most of my work is in digital media, corporate reputation, and leadership.
Over the past year I have co-authored a commissioned study for APEC and IE Singapore on the challenges of SME Internationalization across the 21 APEC member economies. I have also written several Harvard style case studies and am currently working on two books looking at digital media across Asia and corporate reputation. This last year has also been highlighted by numerous invited and keynote presentations throughout Asia.
My executive education and private consulting clients include Intercontinental Hotel Group, IBM, SUN, Koram Bank, US Bancorp, Key Bank, Singapore's CPF, Singapore's MFA, GIC, 3M, Motorola, Singtel, Telus, Text 100, NOL, Shell, and CARE.
On the teaching front, I am a proud graduate of the Harvard Business School PCMPCL and served as the founding director of SMU's teaching excellence initiative.
Before moving to Singapore in 2002, I had the honor of working around the world in places as diverse as Argentina, Germany, Finland, Slovenia, and Japan. I spent six years teaching in the MBA program at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management while also completing my PhD in communication studies.
Digital media across Asia, corporate reputation, reputational risk, leadership and learning, and how to cook a great arrabiata.

Prof. Michael thinks continuously about digital technology, corporate communication and leadership. I am always looking for good stories to be written as Harvard-style case studies which can be shared with other educators. At the moment I am writing two books--one on digital media in Asia and the other on corporate reputation--in addition to consulting, family, and exercise. You can hear my reports from Asia each Monday on the For Immediate Release podcast. If any time remains, I like to cook, listen to jazz, and pursue my life-long goal of reading the world's greatest literature.
