Michael Lombard’s Summary

My experience revolves around improving project management, mostly in the modular/pre-fab construction industry. I've spent most of my time either directly managing construction projects, or putting in place better processes and systems through the use of Lean Management and Continuous Improvement principles.

My passion is building teams and creating the ideal environment for collaboration. As a learner and communicator, I love the process of sharing knowledge and building consensus. My goal is to become a world-class Project Manager and a leader in the Lean Construction movement.

Facilitate the project life cycle, support functional managers, and ensure communication with all project stakeholders. Integrate Lean Construction principles into our project management approach.

  • Blogger

    LeanBuilder.org

    (Construction industry)

    September 2006Present (3 years 3 months)

Originally started as a training tool for my company. Now is an outlet for publishing ideas and concepts relating to Lean Construction and Project Management.

  • Corporate Lean Manufacturing Manager

    Palm Harbor Homes

    (Public Company; PHHM; Construction industry)

    April 2007October 2008 (1 year 7 months)

Promote Lean thinking at Corporate level and across 12 manufacturing locations nationally. Develop training, perform audits, support improvement projects.

What I learned: It's really hard to bring about change in a large organization. As a change agent, it's critical to create a link between improvement activities and business results.

  • Continuous Improvement Manager

    Palm Harbor Homes

    (Public Company; PHHM; Construction industry)

    March 2006April 2007 (1 year 2 months)

Coordinated improvement activities at two homebuilding factories. Performed training, led process improvement events, instituted an idea development system to harness employee creativity.

What I learned: Lean Manufacturing is more about the thought process behind it than the various tools associated with it. Constantly identifying and eliminating waste through team-based problem solving is at the core of lean thinking, and leads to organizational learning.

  • Personal Construction Manager

    Palm Harbor Homes

    (Public Company; PHHM; Construction industry)

    November 2003March 2006 (2 years 5 months)

Managed all aspects of field construction: initial meetings with customers, design, engineering, permitting, installations, inspections, close-out, and customer service.

What I learned: Communication is critical to customer satisfaction. The homebuilding process is extremely stressful for the customer, and "over-communicating" always helps to assuage their stress. And if the customer is upset, it doesn't matter how efficiently the project was completed.

  • Manager-in-Training/Production Supervisor

    Palm Harbor Homes

    (Public Company; PHHM; Construction industry)

    January 2003November 2003 (11 months)

Trained in every aspect of the manufacturing/homebuilding process. Had responsibility for hiring, training, and directly supervising a team of 16 manufacturing associates.

What I learned: In a chaotic work environment, leadership MUST focus on safety & quality all day every day. Even a slight loss of focus can result in hugely wasteful mistakes, or worse, injuries to the workforce. Management has to provide leadership in these areas.
