Megan Reif’s Summary

Megan Reif is a Ph.D. Candidate in Political Science at the University of Michigan completing a dissertation on election violence and a certificate in Spatial Analysis and Geographic Information Systems. Her research addresses relationships between institutions, democratization, and political violence and terrorism. She has conducted dissertation fieldwork in Algeria, Pakistan, and Newark, New Jersey. She designed and authored The Asia Foundation’s Pakistan Voter Education Survey and worked with Pakistan’s Free and Fair Election Network, supervising its election violence media monitoring effort and qualitative and quantitative analysis for its Parallel Vote Tabulation of the 2008 National Assembly election. Previously she was a Charles Manatt Democracy Studies Fellow at the International Foundation for Election Systems, working with the Election Violence Education and Resolution Program. Reif observed both rounds of Indonesia’s 2004 presidential election as part of The Carter Center’s Election Observation Mission. She has co-taught survey methodology courses in Algeria and Oman. She also conducted research on the interaction of the Taliban, the international community, and Islamist political parties in Afghanistan and Pakistan as a U.S. Fulbright Fellow and as an associate at the Afghanistan Foundation. She worked at The Carter Center, handling foundation and bilateral donor relationships for international disease eradication and agriculture programs in Sudan, North Korea, sub-Saharan Africa, and South America as Associate Director of Development for Health Programs.

Reif is a Truman Scholar and holds a BA in Politics from Wake Forest University and a MA in Political Science from the University of Michigan with a cognate field in Middle East and Islamic Studies.
