I worked in the sports department of my college paper for four years, doing a little bit of everything. I spent four semesters as an editor and another four semesters as a beat writer covering UA men's basketball.
Professionally, I have spent two summers interning at MLB.com and one with the Tucson Citizen. I have covered the Dodgers and D-backs for MLB's official site, serving as essentially a backup beat reporter.
From there I was asked by an ESPN editor to set up a Phoenix Suns blog that has since joined ESPN's TrueHoop Network. I cover games and provide analysis of the Suns for ESPN's Suns affiliate blog. This experience has taught me how to run my own Web site and other critical online skills, such as how to podcast.
My goal is to make it in sports media. Three years ago I thought that meant getting hired covering high school sports at a medium-sized paper and working my way up. It doesn't take an acclaimed media critic to understand that's not the way the biz works anymore. Right now I am trying to learn as many new media skills as I can so I can survive in the new world of journalism. I want to be able to shoot/edit video and know the ins and outs of social networking along with my already solid writing and reporting abilities. I want to be on the cutting edge of how sports are covered in the future and lead the wave of a new era in journalism.
