Matt Hollowell’s Experience

  • Coordinating Editor

    LexisNexis

(Public Company; 10,001 or more employees; RUK; Information Technology and Services industry)

    August 2004Present (5 years 4 months)

Officially, I work on the Custom Legal Publishing team and work with authors, agencies, and databases to produce legal “slice” publications. I use InDesign CS3, Word, and Acrobat to proofread, edit, and design products, while also internally working with Editorial, Publishing, and Manufacturing to ensure receipt of materials and that every deadline is met or exceeded. Unofficially, I am part of an unofficial SWAT team, charged with finding new ways to repurpose and repackage existing content, research new publishing avenues, and open new revenue streams. As part of this team, I have helped open a direct-to-consumer print-on-demand channel through Booksurge/Amazon, written various INDD-based scripts (via Javascript) to auto-format existing HTML articles for POD delivery, and am currently researching unmediated publishing options through lexis's online presence that would allow existing customers to create truly customized products on the fly with instant .epub generation and delivery.

  • Adjunct Professor

    Piedmont Community College

    (Educational Institution; Higher Education industry)

    20052006 (1 year )

For three semesters, I taught Developmental Writing at PVCC, which meant that any student who tested below a 7th-grade level in writing attended my classes. My students demanded a high-energy,
creative teaching style, which completely changed my view on education, both from a teaching and student perspective. In a sense, my students were my authors and customers, and the traditional blackboard and schoolgrounds were my product. It was a delicate balance of teaching while learning, engaging while listening, and sneaking in comma rules at every turn.

  • Page Designer

    The Birmingham News

(Privately Held; 201-500 employees; Newspapers industry)

    July 2001July 2004 (3 years 1 month)

For three years, I edited, designed, and wrote headlines for 6 sections of The Birmingham News. While at The News, I learned that deadlines, creativity, and instinct cannot be separated. All three carry equal weight, and it is hard to be successful in the publishing field without them. I also learned the importance of customer service; since most of my sections included features on individuals, sports teams, or businesses, it was important to create a memorable, accessible, creative product.

  • Writer/Designer

    UAB Student Publications

    (Publishing industry)

    20012002 (1 year )

While working at UAB Student Publications, I primarily designed news pages for the Kaleidoscope, UAB's weekly campus newspaper. I also designed two student activities calendars, one of which I won a statewide award for.

  • Photographer/Page Designer

    The Independent Tribune

    (Newspapers industry)

    July 2000December 2000 (6 months)

  • Americorps volunteer / Grant Writer

    Habitat for Humanity

    (Non-Profit; Non-Profit Organization Management industry)

    19992000 (1 year )

While a full-time volunteer for Americorps*VISTA, I researched and wrote numerous grant proposals for Habitat for Humanity Cabarrus County in North Carolina. As a recent college graduate, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to learn, grow, give back, and find myself. In addition to writing grants, I also spent countless hours building homes, coordinating volunteers, and planning/hosting fund-raisers.
