President, Authentic Learning & Teaching, LLC, and Director, Physics Lecture Demonstration Facility, Univ. of Maryland
Washington D.C. Metro Area
Besides my research, I am now engaged in a number of exhilarating activities in science education.
I worked in the Office of Public Outreach at the (Hubble) Space Telescope Science Institute, and prior to that, at the Challenger Center for Space Science Education -- places where I developed science curriculum materials and presented countless workshops to teachers. I also teach at the University of Maryland, where I received multiple teaching awards. (See, for example, http://www.umuc.edu/events/press/news91.html )
I co-founded Authentic Learning & Teaching, LLC, which provides training workshops for educators (both K-12 and college-level), develops educational materials, conducts live, on-line Web seminars, and delivers entertaining and educational presentations for students, teachers, and the public.
I also hold a full time position in the Department of Physics at the University of Maryland, where I am teaching, carrying out research, conducting various public outreach activities, and serving as Director of the Physics Lecture-Demonstration Facility.
My educational presentations include topics such as the process of science, misconceptions in science, effective science teaching, dealing with students who are skeptical of science, addressing questions of creationism and intelligent design, and a number of entertaining and educational astronomical presentations, such as "Science With the Hubble Space Telescope."
You can see one of my publications on the process of science at: http://aas.org/files/The_Process_of_Science.pdf
In my research, I’ve made astronomical observations with many telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope. My specialty is the study of planetary nebulae -- clouds of gas expanding outward from aging stars. (You can see one planetary nebula that I discovered here: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap011006.html )
Besides my educational talks, I often deliver other types of presentations, such as after-dinner talks for corporate events. Here is an article from when I gave the keynote address at a grand opening event for a major exhibit at a college: http://polaris.umuc.edu/~mbobrow2/Keynote.htm
For 2009, the International Year of Astronomy, I have a special presentation in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first use of the telescope: "Telescopes: Giant Eyes on Earth and in Space"
