Since 1987, I am a Full Professor of Information Technology at the Helsinki University of Technology. At HUT, my field of research included themes such as computer-aided engineering and user interface design.
Since 1999, I have been on leave from my chair and running the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT, http://www.hiit.fi), a joint research institute of HUT and the University of Helsinki. At HIIT, my research focuses in new service design for the Mobile Internet. The aim of this work is to have a significant impact on the services and how users will experience them.
Usability research, digital economy, mobile services; planning and launching research activities, managing industry and international research co-operation, all that it takes to run a shop like HIIT.

I specialised my chair initially on industrial applications of information technology, launching an educational program involving courses on enterprise integration and product modelling, and also pursuing actively research in the area until 1998 or so. At present, this area is handled by professor Matti Hämäläinen at HUT.
I also very soon got involved in user interfaces, which around 1992 expanded in usability research. In 1995 I established another educational programme in this area (the "Usability School", jointly with two other universities). I pursued research also in the usability area, that now belongs to the chair of User Interfaces and Usability established in 1999, presently in the hands of professor Marko Nieminen.
I also worked as the Director of the Helsinki Graduate School of Computer Science and Engineering during 1995-2002 and was the Vice-Dean of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in 1998-1999.

Besides running a research group (jointly led by Dr. Giulio Jacucci, my job includes the general management of HIIT, especially planning and preparing new research activities in association with other senior researchers at the institute and generally involving negotiations with industry and other sponsors. I also partake in the preparation of national-level initiatives.
