    ELMA was the only Lamp manufacturing plant in Australia and produced all "Australian made" light globes and fluorescent lamps; Improved Production Efficiencies, increased Machine speeds over the years while the Factory was under constant threat of cheap overseas products. Restructured workforce, introduced safe-working procedures and ISO 9000 Quality Systems.
    Produced over 50 million Incandescent and over 15 million Fluorescent lamps annually.
    I became Export sales Manager and worked together with Novena Marketing Pty, Ltd. to develop our own Brand and started our Export Business. (Travelled to Philippines, Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore)
    I also was for some years Quality Manager, in this position also involved with Standards comity and integrated this position in the end with my position as Production Manager.

    Production of Special Fluorescent Lights.
    Started of in the Circle Line: "The round TL tube" After being able to manage a great quantity of improvements both in process and machine design (all with the help of the relevant departments), I also took on the responsibility for the TL U and TL W and all hand mounting of cathodes for specific Fluorescents lamps in other departments as these activities were all located in Hall A.
    Later on I was also given the responsibilities for the manufacture of fluorescent coatings, special Vertical lamp production (Including TUV and Suntan Lamps) and all other activities allocated in Hal B. Starting with some 280 Employees but being able to reduce this with higher outputs to some 220 employees over the time I was responsible.

    Production of General Incandescent Lights.
    Worked assisting the Department manager in the running of daily production Hal A of high speed production lines up to and including hand operated slow speed Production lines (hands on!)
    Involved in projects to improve equipment (assisting Engineering and design) and project to improve process and products (assisting Development department)
    Responsible for main projects in the production the reduce waste both in material, machine and man-hours.
    Involved with introduction of Computer measuring, testing equipment in production including process control.

    Started my training in Lamp manufacture, Responsible for a Production shift (23:00 - 07:00 and from 07:00 till 16:00) Responsible for production efficiency, reject rates, quality adherence both of standards of products as well standards of work. Successfully improved all these as well as helped with development/design of "tipped candle" equipment.

    Started as Apprentice Engineer and over the years went through the ranks to end up as acting Second Engineer. Involved with shift work while sailing and maintenance work while in port in each rank.
    All work included both Theory as well as all Trade skills.
    Specific responsibilities per Rank:
    Apprentice; learning, helping in all tasks as well as keeping log books of all work done.
    5th Engineer Auxiliary equipment like pumps, filters, emergency
    4th Engineer Auxiliary Engines and refrigeration plants
    3rd Engineer Main engine and all Electrical equipment
    2nd Engineer Organizing general and specific maintenance tasks, responsible for all of engineering crew and work allocation to same.

After first 2 years of both Theoretical and Practical education in all aspects (to become proficient as an all round trades person: plumbing, electrical, mechanical, machine maintenance, maintenance systems as well as managing etc.) maintaining a logbook as an apprentice and going back to school for higher education every time while on leave.
