CEO, Marketing Consultant and Internet Visionary at Smart-Tactics Ltd
Ireland
I have always been results orientated, and get a kick out of setting a target and blowing it away. I have found it an even greater kick to inspire others to do the same.
In recent years I have concentrated upon how to use internet technology to help sales and marketing become more successful, particularly for large value sales.
I'm not talking about CRM, that done very well by others. I am talking about how to get sales/marketing/technical teams to collaborate better, prepare better, present better, react quicker to change and ultimately to win.
See www.thepowerofinsight.com as an example.
I still consult to small group of Blue Chip IT clients; creating market positioning, marketing & sales campaigns, creative writing and sometimes the real fun of blue sky thinking and making some big ideas - with actions to turn them into reality.

I set up the company to spend more time on a variety of exciting client projects. We still consult to major companies on marketing and improving their business, but the largest part of our business is developing and managing complex collaboration based websites for global sales and marketing teams. We now have two mature products SALESinsight and COMMUNITYinsight.

We were a successful reseller of Digital (DEC) mid range systems - VAX, Unix and also PC. But growth was limited. I created a new division focused upon Networking (and won reseller of the year in our first year).
I then forced fundamental change and made new Divisions for other brands - HP, Sun, IBM and Oracle. These were turning over more than £100M pa within 2 years - and are the back bone of the business even today.

May 1992 — August 2001 (9 years 4 months)
Whilst having a day job running the groups most profitable business I was also responsible for the group marketing, and created a number of new business divisions selling high-end IT solutions to corporations. Setting up specialist divisions for HP, SUN, IBM and Oracle amongst others - these ultimately became the backbone of the group.

I took over the management of Hamilton Rentals, a well respected but languishing computer rental supplier. In 4 years I took the business from laggard in the UK to be the leader in Europe. We smashed our competitors with a mix of increased investement, improved products, massively enhanced services, innovative marketing and great sales. It was paid for by higher prices and greater sales. We multipled profits 5 fold..

I was headhunted. I had set up the sales division in a rival firm, and we grew from £5M to £56M annual turnover in 2 years.
At Northamber I had 45+ salespeople, and we grew to exceed £100M.

I joined TI straight from University. My engineering degree had got me the interview, but I was the only new gradute who was not an straight A electronics engineer. The reason was that the guys who wanted me, wanted by ballsy approach and they wanted a businessman too. I was the protege of Irfam Salim - my boss. I joined the Consumer electronic dvision, selling calculators and educational toys and home computers. On my first day I was writing copy for catalogue sales. Within 3 weeks I was responsible for TV and Radio ads.
Then I spent 4 months and made a new 'English' version of my premium product Speak & Spell. I had to make it myself as there had never been a speaking product that did not have a US voice, and no-one outside the US knew how to do it.
I then became the youngest ever sales person in the division and outsold all others for Home Computers (I was closer to the user group age and saw the sales wave before the other guys).
