Mark Edwards’s Experience

  • Principal Architect

    StorMagic

    (Computer Software industry)

    August 2006November 2008 (2 years 4 months)

  • Principal Engineer

    Adaptec Inc

(Public Company; ADPT; Computer Software industry)

    February 2004June 2006 (2 years 5 months)

I worked for the CTO group in Adaptec exploring several ways of adding value to storage.

I wrote an LVM for Windows that could mix DAS and SAN storage and also became an expert with MPIO.

My most significant moment in this job came over Christmas 2004 when Adaptec's large customer was threatening to cancel the major business deal of the company. I flew to NC over Christmas to lead the crisis management and over 3 weeks recovered a disfunctional project to a state of product acceptance by the OEM.

However, Adaptec were a complete basket case of a mis-managed company, heavy losses, lack of vision and poor acquisitions lead them to a position where they had to shrink rapidly and as a result they closed the UK development office.

  • Senior Systems Architect

    Elipsan Ltd

    (Privately Held; Computer Software industry)

    January 2003February 2004 (1 year 2 months)

Elipsan was spun out of Eurologic when Eurologic was purchased by Adaptec Inc. At Elipsan we had the vision of creating easy to use and simple to manage iSCSI SANs.

As early adopters of Microsoft storage technolgies to underpin the concepts we were for a time a Microsoft poster child.

Elipsan became a major supplier to Adaptec servicing a large contract won by Adaptec. As a result Adaptec purchased Elipsan to bring the development in house (and royally scewed it all up).

  • Senior Systems Architect

    Eurologic Systems

    (Computer Software industry)

    April 2000January 2003 (2 years 10 months)

Eurologic were one of the main storage appliance manufacturers based in Dublin. They purchased a small software team in the UK in order to move in to value add software in the storage market.

My role was largely in research projects and involved major participation in the IETF efforts to create iSCSI. Although eventual products used Linux, I wrote a proof of concept iSCSI target for Windows when a major OEM was considering an iSCSI product. Tested by the OEM my software based target performed faster and more efficiently than all the early iSCSI HBA's tested.

  • Chief Scientist

    Avantis Ltd

(Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Computer Software industry)

    March 1998April 2000 (2 years 2 months)

Avantis produced CD-ROM server products, my role was to design and produce the next generation products more aligned with Windows.

  • Principal Engineer

    FTP Software Inc

(Public Company; 501-1000 employees; Computer Software industry)

    February 1996January 1998 (2 years)

I had several roles during this period as FTP continued its inexorable slide of mis-management in a changing market. Principal role was a long spell working with the Advanced Research Group and pulling the irons out of the fire for a long term failing project. Also worked a lot on prototyping network security, much of what we now see today in personal firewalls, not that the Company understood or took any interest in the work.

  • Research Manager

    Firefox Communications Inc

(Public Company; 51-200 employees; Computer Software industry)

    December 1991February 1996 (4 years 3 months)

One of the more fun places I've passed through. Joined a very small company working on revolutionary technology to provide LAN access to the Internet. This is where I first participated in standards body activity and first came to work alongside Microsoft by helping to create Windows Sockets and was part of the Winsock Advisory Board that created Winsock 2.

Saw the Company grow exponentially, through it's IPO and to its eventual sale to FTP Software Inc.

  • Programmer

    The Software Forge Ltd

(Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Computer Software industry)

    January 1988December 1991 (4 years)

This company introduced me to networking protocols, they produced the first PC card for X.25. The card supported plenty of other protocols, largely within the OSI framework. Spent a year on secondment in New York as technical consultant on a large project. In my final role I produced the first commercial implementation of TCP/IP over X.25.
