The College of Engineering at Texas A&M is one of the largest engineering colleges in the United States, one of the top five U.S. producers of undergraduate engineering degrees. The engineering graduate and undergrad programs are consistently ranked in the top 10% among U.S. universities.
I grew up tinkering with electronics. I learned to solder and etch printed circuit boards long before I learned to drive. Taught myself boolean algebra, then built a complete functioning robot (not a kit) out of TTL ICs, power transistors, relays and motors at age 16 (back in the days before microprocessors or lego robotics). Even with a natural talent, electrical engineering at a top tier school can be quite a challenge. I kept at it; it took me six years. I paid for my education myself, with my own hard-earned money. I worked 60 hour weeks at three different on-campus jobs while taking a full course load, and did co-op work at a major aerospace defense contractor on alternating semesters.
Journalism 1980 — 1982
On the way to class one day I happened upon the scene of a very recent accident. A driver had a heart attack; his vehicle rolled out of control down a steep hill and crashed into the front window of a pizza parlor. I was taking a photojournalism class and had my camera equipment ready and with me. It was an incredible journalistic opportunity. However, I could not bring myself to photograph the devastation and suffering in a completely detached manner as required by journalistic ethics. Instead I set the equipment aside and pitched in to help the injured. It was on this day I knew I could never be a journalist of any kind. I decided right then to be a news maker rather than a news reporter. I changed my major to electrical engineering that afternoon.
